HELP. INDIGNANTLY REFUSED

LONDON, August 17. : Dr Mannix, interviewed regarding Mr Lloyd George's offer to assist His mother to visit him in England, said j "She needs no assistance that is in Mr Lloyd George's power to give, but she cannot resist the burden-of 89 years.' Perhaps .Mr Lloyd George will do rho the favour of not further . mentioning, my .mother's name.". Archbishop Mannix denies the report from Rome that the Pope advised him to refrain from going to Ireland.

POPE SORELY PERPLEXED. LONDON, August 18. The Daily Chronicle's Rome correspondent reports that the Vatican is deluged with-'telegrams from the Catholic hierarchy throughout .the world urging, the Pope to make a formal.protest.against Dr Mannix's. treatment. . The correspondentlearned that tho Pope is sorely .perplexed how to act for. tho best. Probably Dr Mannix will be.requested to quicken his Journey to Rome for a personal conference with the Popo.

August 20. The Central News' states that the Government learns that the Consistorial Congregation, Rome, addressed to Dr Mannix a strong exhortation to maintain the greatest possible moderation on political questions. . • Interviewed by the Australian Press Association, Dr Mannix said there was no truth in the report that ha had received an exhortation from Rome. ROME, August 18. ,

The Holy See takes the view that there is no reason to interfere on behalf of Dr Mannix. ' Britain's action _ was' justified from the fear that Dr Mannix would cause further trouble. Moreover, there is no religious authority in Ireland, and~therefore no : ecclesiastical: motives for the visit.
