VISIT OF GENERAL BIRDWOOD.
TO REACH DUNEDIN JUNE 5. General Sir William Birdwood, who is making a very brief visit to New Zealand, is expected to reach Wellington by the Manuka on the 31st inst. He will have civic receptions there and at Ghristchurch, which is the next city on his itinerary, and after a brief call at Ashburton on Friday, j June 4-, he will proceed to Timaru, and j epend the night there. On .Saturday he will go on by the first express to Oamaru, where another reception will be accorded him, and will then join the second express j for Dunedin, so that he is expected here at i 8.25 on Saturday night. No arrangements I have been made for his Sunday here, but | on Monday ho will, be accorded a civio ' reception and a welcome from the returned Boku6rs. He will leave by the express on Tuesday morning for InvercATgilJ, and will
pay a visit to Queenstown before passing through. Dunedin again on June 11. He is due to leave "New Zealand from Wellington on the 12th. No .purely military functions are being arranged in General Birdwood's honour, as this visit is really a private one. Arrangements for his fitting reception are in the hands of the Department of Internal Affairs, the civic authorities, and Returned Soldiers Associations. Our Vvellirigton correspondent -wires that the Government purpose entertaining General Birdwood at a luncheon in the Parliamentary Buildings. Ho -will be the guest of the Government during his New Zealand visit.
