TRENTHAM SHOOTING

ANNUAL MEETING. WELLINGTON, March 4. Bright sunshine, with a very light rear ■wind, marked the opening of tho fifteenth aanual meeting of the Dominion Rifle Association this morning. The entries topped the 400 mark, and when paraded Colonel R. J. Collins, chief executive officer, addressed them briefly, first greeting the old hands, and welcoming those visiting tho meeting for the first time. He referred to the presence of the veterans, Colonel E. R. Smith and Rifleman J. Parslow, both ex-champions, whoso devotion to sport with the rifle should act as an incentive to the younger men. Rifleman A. Henderson, of the Akarana Club, was the veteran of veterans, whose association with the . meeting dated from 1871. Colonel Collins expressed disappointment with the number of entries received, but considered the-reason easy to find; in fact, that the new rifle barrels promised last yeair had not yet come to hand. He said that this question of getting the best up-to-. date weapons was one that agitated marksmen from, the earliest days of shooting in New Zealand. . Several changes had been made, but each time a new rifle had been issued it had been recalled, through some defect in developing. Colonel Collins briefly traced these changes from the days when New Zealanders were armed with the Snider rifle, and having the distinction o? being on a level with the Chinese army, v/lich also had these fearsome instruments. However, he understood, new nfle barrels were arriving next month, and he believed he could assure competitors that next yea.r they would have no grounds for c< mplaint in this direction. He added that tho Defence Department was doing everything possible in other ways to assist the association. Soma difficulty had been experienced in getting sufficient markers, as a result of which to-day's shooting would be coffined to two ranges, but, this disability also, it was hoped, would *be overcome. In conclusion Colonel Collins welcomed Sergeant Leslie Loveday, M.M., the present Bisley King's Prizeman, mention of whose name evoked worm applause, and at Colonel Collins's invitation three rousing cheers greeted the champion. . The light rear breeze held all day, and gave no trouble at the short ranges. When the first match was finished at lunch time it was seen that the ex-Bisley champion, Major Wallingford, late chief musketry uistmctor to the New Zealand forces, had given a taste of his quality, notching 74 out of a possible 80 in three tricky practices. SECOND DAT. TRENTHAM, March 5. Thin fog lay over Trentham at daylight, after a bright, moonlight night, in which a sharp touch of frost made itself felt The sun soon routed the mist wreaths, and when the day's business began at 8 o'clock not a cloud "marred the blue sky, and the sun promised a scorching day—a promise which was fully redeemed. Generally good "with exceptions" sums up : the character of the shooting to-day, which was devoted to Belt matches. These have now reached the stage when aggregates become interesting as showing in what direction the 1920 champion may be sought. ■ The figures will be worked out to-morrow. So far H- C. Loveday, with 370, appears to hold the leadership. The Senior Cadet Championship was fired during the afternoon., and though . entries were ..not so large as had b?en hoped for,. the competition evoked a good deal of interest. It was held under service conditions at 200 and 500 yards. Those cadets attending the big meeting who all came from other districts had «i distinct advantage in having their own rifles and having been through the mill on Thursday with the men. The Wellington boys had to use rack rifles issued on arrival this afternoon, so obviously they could not expect to keejj in the hunt with the' visitors, though one managed to get fourth place. Two Hamil-. ton lads tied for first place with 73;;but'' of a possible 80. The result of the match was £2 and a .gold medal to Cadet L. Edgecombe (Hamilton), 73; £1 to Q.M.S. J. R. Bird (Hamilton). 73; 10s to Cadet 0. AshJp-?y (Auckland.', 71; and 5s each'to Corporal Wilson (Petone) 69. Corporal Roche (Auckland).,, and Cadet Lambert -(Marlborough), each 67. ■ * .
