POPPIES FROM FRANCE.

OPPOSITION TO INTRODUCTION. " OAMARU, March. 6.

The introduction of the poppy for sentimental reasons into the dominion from France, where it is declared a noxious weed, was strongly deprecated at the County Council meeting to-day. It was stated that St. John's wort planted in a few gardens, in Australia.was:how a universal pest. The poppy is a particular menace to wheat. The following resolution was carried: —"That this council protest against the introduction of the poppy as a noxious weed; that the Government be asked to take such steps that may be necessary to protect agriculturists from this pernicious weed, over which farmers in France and Belgium have no control."
