A DAILY EMPLOYMENT DEPOT.

A scheme which should prove of great use to women whom the war has deprived of the possibilities of regularly employing personal maids and of services not usually undertaken by ordinary domestic servants, has been devised by Lady Bective. It is to be known as "The Daily Employment Depot." The depot has been formed to supply temporary woman workers by the day or hour, and to'offer varied well-paid employment to those unable to take permanent posts, thus allowing them to live in their own homes, while adding to their incomes. Lady Bective, explaining the origin of the depot, said that even before the°war many women engaged in professional or other work had very little time to look after their clothes, and she had thought of some scheme for putting them in touch with ladies' maids _ who had married or other women with special training in some of the needle trades, who had some time, but not whole time, to give. Since the war the position of many professional and other women unable to keep up pre-war expenditure had grown acute. Clolihes had become so dear that people hesitated to throw away even oldfashioned dresses, and carpets, and upholsterings cost so much that those who could not afford new ones were anxious to find someone skilled enough to make the best of the old. Owing to the increase in the cost of everything, too, many women who had married from better-class service, ladies' maids and ( others,,, who could not resume their previous employment owing to family ties, would gladly devote a day or more a week to adding to their incomes. The committee hoped to bring together those who needed work and those who needed workers.
