A SAVAGE BLOW.
HOTELKEEPER ATTACKED IN BED. I NELSON, Mixh' 7. Mr A. Staple-ton, proprietor of Stevenson's Hotel at Reefton, and owner of the irotter Palmdale' was the victim of an attack about half-past 3 on Saturday morning. He was staying with a' friend at Bright water, and his bedroom was entered while he was asleep. He received a severe
blow on the side of the head with a heavy object, which caused a large wound. He was able to get up and grapple with the intruder, who, however, escaped. Mr Stapletqn was about on Saturday. Robbery is believed to have been the object of the assault, but nothing was taken.
