DAMAGED OIL CARGO.
HEAVY DAMAGED AWARDED. . CHRISTCHURCE. February 25. In the Supreme Court M/ Justice Herdman heard a claim by the Vacuum Oil Company against the owners of the American ship Luzon for the sum of £2786 14s lid on account of damage alleged to have been caused to the cargo through unseaworthiness, or in the alternative, negligence. Counsel for plaintiff said that when the vessel arrived it was found that through defective hatches salt water had entered the hold and corroded many tins of oil, the cargo on inspection being in a shocking condition. A bank approached plaintiff company, and gave an undertaking that the amount of judgment Would be paid within a week of the court's decision. After hearing evidence, his Honor said he could not take into consideration variation in rate of exchange. Plaintiff's counsel then amended the claim, and his Honor gave judgment for £2024 13s 9d damages and £l4O 4-s 6d interest, assessing the costs at -100 guinea* plus witnesses' expenses and disbursements.
