PENINSULA A. AND P. SOCIETY

ANNUAL SHOW. The annual show of the Otago Peninsula A. and P. Society was held at Portobello on Saturday. The society was at a disadvantage m holding the show at the end of the season. Last year it had to be postponed from December to February owing to the influenza epidemic, and this year the original date was abandoned on account of Carnival Week. -The weather, too, was very unfavourable on Saturday, especially in the morning, , when a driving mist did hot tend to encourage folk to leave the shelter of their homes, and as a result the attendance was not large. The entries wer e satisfactory, but the unseasonable weather prevented some of the exhibits from coming forward. Light horses were the strongest section of the show. The hack classes provided keen competition, as the quality of the horses exhibited was a credit to the district. The ponies were a very attractive looking lot, the 14-i hands class drawing high praise from the judge. The draughts, though not such a large section, were also very fair types. There were not" many entries in. sheep. Cattle classes were not so well supported as the society expected to have been, considering the fact that the Peninsula abounds with high-class dairying stock. Mrs C. Weir had a fine lot of Ayrshires on exhibition, and annexed most of the prizes unopposed. Mrs F. Hellyer was the most successful exhibitor of the Channel Island breeds, Mr J. . Carruthers showed a few Holsteins, and the awards for crossbreds went to Mrs Weir and the Messrs Stewart Bros. J. he jumping competitions, which were watched with interest by those present, caused much amusement. Messrs S. Hinkley (the secretary) and M. Allan worked hard to make the show a success.
