Horse owning is a fairly cosily pastime nowadays, and some trainers make it needlessly more so by nominating horses in throe or four races each day. " —A correspondent says that Lord Clifdan's victory in the English St. Leger, as mentioned in the Witness, after Amythas'e win in the Dunedin Cup, was a remarkable one. He was left at the poet, and the field was 100 yards away before Lord St. Vincent's horse was moving. The jockey rode a judicious race, not bustling his mount, and quickly, but surely, made up his lo3t ground until he reached the leaders in the straight, and then won handsomely at the post. Lord Clifden was a great horse, and should have won the Derby easily, but Geo. Fordham, one of England's best horsemen at the time, was caught napping.
