WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Feom Oub Own Correspondent.) September 23.

The attendance at the Otaki meeting on Saturday and Monday was affected by the restricted train service. Mr K. XL. WKipwith made his reappearance as starter at the meeting, and the new Maori judge acted for the first time and got through without any trouble. Formerly the club had a Maori starter. , Koyal Exchango (King Rufus—Cornmoice) proved the best of the Maiden candidates. Sweet Memory, a full sister to Pretty Bobby, ran second in the Maiden, and was sent out a good favourite for the Trial on the second day, but was beaten by Idleness (Bezonian—Peace), whose first success it was. Both horses are trained at lrentnam, Royal Commerce by J. Lowe and Idleness by 11. Telford. ' . _ . Want won the Steeplechase on the first day when he carried three times as much money as First Line. The latter was best backed on the second day, and scored. Want fell about six furlongs from iome, but it is doubtful if he would have beaten First Line. ~ In the Memorial Stakes on the opening d.ny Rosa Pink scored in good style from Mascot, who will improve with the racing. Rose Pink has incurred 51b penalty in the New Zealand Cup, and his owner does not want to put up more if he can avoid it. She has been accepted for at Wanganui, but is not making the journey there. She has also incurred 101 b penalty in the principal event at Kurow. and will probably be found competing at the southern meetings belore racing at Riccarton. Mascot failed on tlie second day, but will probably improve with racing. The only other Cup candidate to compete was Swe't Tipperary. Chaeronia (Demosthenes— Formality) a stable mate of Mascot got the verdict in the Stewards'' Hack Handicap on the first day, but most people on the course thought that Printemps had got up. The latter is under orders for Dunedin to compete m the GSuineas. . The Trentham trainers had quite an innings, W. Smart being the only local owner that did not win. Matatua (Birkenhead— Sunbor.net) scored a lucky win m the i< lying Handicap on the first day, when Astinome did not show up well. \N itn a change of riders the latter scored on the second day. Sacramento and Old bold, who were successful at the same course in June/ won on the first day. Old Gold (Hymettus-Florigold) also won. on the second day. He looks like making good, as he does not pull like most of the tribe. Arch Lassie (Marble Arch—Lassie Doon), who scored on the second day, has greatly improved, and will win again. Dick and Tyne scored their first wins on tho second day. They were both ridden by. C. Emerson. Tvne. by Danube —Lady Reina, paid a double-figure dividend. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. OTAKI RACES.
