OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Otago Edition Board was commenced on the 17th, id was attended by Messrs J. Wallace lairman), P. M'Kinlay, J. H. Wilkinson, . Livingstone, J. Smith, J. Horn, W. 11. :-ugh, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS. The Katea Committee's application for phalting or concreting was approved, proded the committee contribute £lO, the oard to grant ±-'lO, which, with the Goynmeiifc subsidy, would make £3O avail>ie. ;

The Cromwell Committee's application for a•• cover for the vehicle used in the conveyance of the Kawarau Gorge children was refused.

The offer of Mr James M'Ourdy to provide one-third of the cost of reinstating the fence between his property and the Forbury School was accepted. The • Tuapeka Mouth Committee's application for the installation of a hot water service at the teacher's residence was again held over GENERAL. A petition was read from 20 residents of Ranfurly, representing 28 children attending that school, protesting against the proposal to remove the school into the township.—Received. The department wrote sanctioning a grant for the. purchase of an additional acre of land at Milburn for a school playground.—Received. The Musselburgh Committee applied for a Government subsidy on the Memorial Hall to be used for magic lantern instruction of the pupils.—The Maori Hill Committee asked for a subsidy on the memorial and drinking fountains in the playground. —Both committees to be informed that Cabinet had decided that the Government subsidy would be granted only for rolls of honour placed on walls inside school buildin #s-

The Benhar Committee applied to have the playing area attached to the school increased. —Negotiations to be entered into for the acquirement of an additional acre of land for the purpose. The Secretary intimated that the Education Board Conference would bo held in Wellington, commencing on the 24th inst. —Keceived.

The Canterbury Education Board intimated that the conference of Education Board architects, had been postponed until the train restrictions were definitely removed. —Received. Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs furnished a list of school books, which _ they wished placed on the board's official list. —Referred to Books Committee. The head teacher at Portobello applied for a rain gauge, M. and M. thermometer, and barometer, also picture moulding and glass. —Referred to committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs Brugh, Wilkinson, and senior inspector to report. Approval to let school residences at Hillend and Blue Spur wa3 given, and the applications for approval to let the Blacks and Matakanui residences were held over.

Shearer waited on the board as a deputation from the Seacliff Committee to urge the erection of an open-air cla,ss room. The deputatioii stated that there was every probability of a bio- increase in the attendance of scholars in the near future They thought that the Government should provide the building but the committee would be willine to endeavour to raise some funds towards the cost.—The chairman pointed, out that if the committee would undertake to raise part of the money it would give some grounds for approaching the department. —Mr Hobson said that the committee would be prepared to rmV.e ym to £3o. After the deputation had withdrawn the board resolved that application be made to the department for the building asked for, with an intimation that the committee would contribute £3O.

An application from the Sawyer's Bay Committee for improvements to the school grounds was approved on the architects recommendation, the committee to be asked to nay one-third of the cost of asphalting. The appointment of Messrs Wm. Reay and Fahey as school commissioners at Waronui was agreed to. An application from Macraes for the renovation of the residence was referred to the architect, with power to act.
