i 6 DOW! versus A GREAT amount of controversy has come about lately as to the relative efficiency of the two methods of skimming used in separators of various makes. As a matter of fact, the same basic -principle —viz., the tendency of the cream to travel to the centre and the heavier skimmed milk to flow to the outside, underlies both systems. After a great amount of experiment the manufacturers of the well-known Velox machines found that for separators up to 50 gallons per "hour capacity, the link-blade bowl had many advan- . tage3 over the di3c bowl. In the disc bowl it is most essential that the layers of milk be very thin, otherwise the milk will sliclfe, and not revolve at the same, speed as the bowl. Moreover, the distance between the plates must always be the same. For many reasons it happens that in smaller sized separators the layers do not remain the same. Take two layers of milk, one say twice as thick as the other. Precisely tho same force—viz., the friction between the disc surfaces is to bring the bigger quantity of -milk into rotation as the smaller quantity. What happens? Obviously it requires double the time. With a few inaccurate layers the capacity of the separator is first of all reduced, and, secondly, on account of these varying currents in the bowl, the skimming efficiency is reduced. Now to the Link-blade system _ In this bowl the milk is brought into rotation mechanically, and as soon as it comes between the discs it must revolve at the same speed as the bowl, thus ensuring the necessary centrifugal force. On account of this mechanical action it is possible (and this is a great advantage) to have a larger spacebetween the blades, consequently fewer plates and a smaller bowl. With fewer plates they can be made of stouter material, and this is why the link bowl can be guaranteed as long as the frame itself. At this stage attention might also be drawn to the point that, in the link bowl, all the blades are connected on a ring, and, therefore, always kept together. They are easily inserted into the bowl, whereas the plates of smaller sized separators are always troublesome to assemble, and. in consequence of what has been said before, must be of flimsy material. With tho mechanical action of the link-blade bowl, full service of each layer is ensured, whether the distances between the plates are accurately the same or not. Herein lies another great advantage. All Velox separators up to 50 gallon capacity are constructed on the linkblade system. Those of larger capacity are on the disc system, because they can be made more strongly and accurately than the smaller sizes, and, therefore', the advantages apparent when the question comes to the smaller sizes are lost. Farmers have told us in regard to spme other makes, that they df come up to their rated cap; Beware when you buy a separate w say 18 gallon capacity that you don't really get one of only 15 gallons. Make sure. Don't be misled. Our confidence in the Velox is such that we are prepared to give you one month's free trial on your farm. Thisoffer is genuine—it is straightforward. Choose the separator you want, and write us. You can have any Velox outfit on one month's free trial —freight free. Work it under your own conditions, and after four weeks make vour decision.
