CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held on the 22nd inst.; present—<Crs T. • Maginnesa (chairman), Jas. Begg, John Christie, JI. E. Steel, J. Edwards, Jas. Gumming, A. North, A. MTntyre, and H. Morrison. engineer's report. The Engineer reported that the new Clydevale punts had been completed, and were working satisfactorily. A start had been made to erect a new concrete culvert near Mr Humphrey's, on Puerua-Roma-hapa main road. The Balclutha to Port Molyneux road had been flooded, and the road had been closed for several days. The flooding of the road was due to the backwater from the Clutha River. Regarding D. -Murray's and others request for deviation of road leading to Messrs Murray and M'Kenzie's properties at Clydevale, an inspection was made, and a new line was selected and agreed to by both parties.—Or Begg considered that, aa it was now the beginning of the season, they should have a comprehensive report on the roads and the work required in order to allocate their expenditure. They could not lay off this year's work unless they had these reports.— After discussion, it was resolved that the engineer provide a comprehensive report on the bridges. FINANCE. The financial statement showed that the receipts for the month totalled £207 17s 7d and the expenditure £2007 8s Bd. CORRESPONDENCE. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, wrote regarding rates on Clifton Settlement, that he had given very careful consideration to the question of paying rates to the local authority on lands purchased for discharged. soldier settlement and not disposed of, and had decided that the Government could not undertake to pay rates in such cases. The Secretary, Otago Motor Club, wrote in reply to the council that the club supplied notice boards for important road junctions for erection by county councils. No charge was made for them, and it was done in the interests of motorists. Mr A. S. Malcolm, M.P., wrote that he had written to the Minister asking him to gazette a quarter of an acre of the Clydevale reserve as a fallen soldiers' memorial. The writer asked that the council define the section it required.—Cr Morrison moved —"That the member for the riding and engineer arrange with the Peace Memorial Committee to have the survey carried out." —Carried. The Town Clerk, Balclutha, wrote applying for payment of the following amounts promised on behalf of the council towards the peace celebrations: —Richardson Riding. £5; Clutha Riding, £5; South Molyneux Riding, £2 10s;—total, £l2 10s.—Gr North said that South Molyneux had not promised any contribution, and should be cut out. — Crs Christie and Edwards stated that the other two amounts were correct, and these two were passed for payment. The Clerk, Bruce County Council, wrote that his council had resolved at its last meeting to request that the openings on the Balclutha traffio bridge between the . footway and the traffic way be closed up, as it was considered that these openings were a source of danger to children.— Bruce County Council to be informed that this council could not agree to the request. Miss A. Logan, Greenvale, and two other ratepayers, wrote asking that the council make an inspection of the Pomahaka River at Kelso as early as possible to 6ee what could be done to alter the present oourse of the river.—Tuapeka Council to be written to with a view to securing a Government engineer to inspect the proposed work. Mr A. V. King, secretary Farmers' Union, Clydevale, wrote that he had been instructed to ask the council to make application to the Government to erect a traffic bridge over the river at the ClydevaleGreenfield punt.—Cr Morrison moved that the request be supported.—Seconded by Cr Edwards and carried. Mr W. S. Thomson, Warepa, wrote again drawing attention to the state of the cutting that had boon washed away by the Kaihiku Stream when in flood, near the Gleufalloeh sheep dip.—The fund available to be spent on the road as requested. Mr D. Murray, Clydevale, wrote that he was prepared to give the land for road deviation as pointed out through part of his Clydevale property leading to the lower Pomahaka bridge, in exchange for an equal amount of land now forming the present road. —The.engineer to hays the survey and exchange of the land carried out. Mr A. K. Campbell, Port Molyneux, -crote asking that the land fund money &» spent on the Nugget Burn road leading

to his section. He also understood that there was a grant of £IOO to be spent on the road at the Ahuriri end. If that waa formed and a good track made ho could get timber in, and it would also be an easy outlet to tho Owaka sales.— Cr North moved that the engineer have the first part of the work done, and the Public Works Department bo asked to spend the £IOO grant. Seconded by Cr Edwards and carried. Mr James Wyber, Hina Hina, wrote requesting application to be made to the Government for £IOO for his road, as the grades were very steep.—Application approved, on the motion of the chairman. GENERAL. It was resolved that notices be sent to all property holders allowing gorse to grow on the road to clear the same. The chairman and Crs North and Christie were nominated as members of the South Otago Hospital Committee, and it was resolved that the member of the district be asked to support the Bill in the House. It was resolved that tho work of widening on M'Kenzie's road, Glenomaru, be done. . , The following resolutions were carried:— "That specifications for the forming and metalling of Dunvegan road from foot of hill to Dunvegan be prepared for next mooting." "That the clerk apply to the Government for a grant of £SOO to subsidise a similar sum to be spent by the council on the Balclutha-Arthurton road in repairing damage done by the excessive motor car traffic which has followed the restriction of the railway service." " That the engineer be authorised to expend" £3O on gravel on Benio-Waikaka Valley road." . , " That the engineer dall tenders for gravelling on Seddon road, starting at Quin's gate to Mr Crump's gate, about 30 chains of gravel to come from Kelso." "That the engineer report at next meeting on the condition of the fish ponds road, and give estimate of cost of necessary repairs." "That tenders be called for the quarrying and breaking and placing of 500 yards of maintenance metal between Clinton and the hill above the upper bridge in the Popotunoa Gorge—namely, betwesn the bridges." "That the engineer report on metalling on the road giving access to Lochindorb small grazing runs from the Clinton-Owaka road." "That tenders be called for forming and metalling about 15 chains immediately to the south of the lower Willowburn bridge on the Main South road." " That contracts be advertised _in the Otago Daily Times, as -well as in local papers, for the following two months."
