EXPLOSION OF BENZINE.
YOUTH, SEVERELY INJURED. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. This afternoon the people in Cathedral Square were startled by a terrific explosion, which occurred in • the premises occupied by Mr W. J. "Bull, typewriter expert, in Chanvery lane, adjoining Everybody's Picture Theatre. The theatre was holding a session at the time, and the audience, which included many children, was considerablystartled, a panic being narrowly averted. The whole of Mr Bull's workshop and office was badly damaged. A youth named Charles M'Glashan was cleaning a typewriter with benzine at the rear of the workshop when the benzine ignited and caused the explosion. M'Glashan was badly burned about the face and sustained several severe cuts. He was removed to the hospital. Large sections of the walls of the workshop were blown out, and the ceiling fell in. All the windows in the immediate vicinity were shattered, and the wall dividing the workshop from Everybody's Theatre bulged out, but did not collapse.
