Brookes arid Patterson won the American National Doubles Tennis Championship at Boston, defeating Tilden and Rich-ards—s-6, 6—3, 4—6, 4—6, 6—2. In the Davis Cup final tie contests, in the Doubles Gobert and Laurentz (France) beat Rober-Barrett and Turnbull (Britain), 6—o, 6—l, 12—10. In the Davis Cup Singles Gobert beat Davson, 7—5, 4—6, 6—4. _ Kingscote beat Laurentz, 4 —6, 6-2, 4—6, 6-4. The New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association has announced that it has been definitely arranged that the chaUenge round for the Davis Cup shall be played in Sydney in December. TAIERI TENNIS CLUB. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Taieri Tennis Club last night. Mr W. Wilson presided. The .annua! report stated that the present membership of the club was given at 26 ladies and 13 gentlemen. Office-bearers for the incoming year were elected as follows: —President, Mr A. P. Cheyne; vice-presidents—Messrs J. O'Brien, W. Allan, J. A. M'Kinnon, and Drs Allan and Spedding; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Harper; committee —Mrs Guest, Misses Collie .and M'Leod, and Messrs Wilson, Oliver, Bowden, and O'Brien; Match Committee —Mrs Guest, Miss Collie, and Mr W. Harper; auditor, Mr Wilson. It was resolved to hold another welcome home social to returning soldier members about the middle of next month. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the matter of a roll of honour for club members. It was resolved to hold an annual ball each year in connection with the club. The opening of the season was fixed for early in October. ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held on the 25th, and was attended by Messrs G W. MTntosh (president), Cowie, C. S. Jenkins, Hungerford, Robinson, A. E. Jenkins, Black, and J. R Wilson. The Game Committee recommended that a deputation wait upon a Minister of the Crown as soon as possible to present the needs of the deer forests, and ask for financial assistance in the direction of culling. The committee recommended that a permit be issued to Mr D. Urquhart (Hawea Flat) to shoot hinds for meat at Timaru Creek and Long Valley Creek ;also that a permit be issued to Mr H. M. Mackay (Hawea Flat) to shoot deer for meat, up to Timaru Creek. The committer recommended that an application be made to Alexandra and Roxburgh as to supplying 20 pairs of quail for the Waitaki Society, and that if the birds could not be obtained from those localir ties mentioned permission bo granted the Waitaki Society to get some birds in the Otago Society's district, and that the Waitaki Society be informed, by way of suggestion, that the quail could probably bo got cheaper from the Nelson Society. Mr T. A. Gillespie (Hunter Valley) had written that he had shot 30 hinds and 12 stags on his permit. In connection with an inquiry from the Whangarei Society as to the cost of black opossums, the committee recommended that a copy of the letter be sent to Mr T. Telford (Otanomomo), and that he be

asked if he had any objection to the Otago Society getting some opossums from his property.—Adopted. The Angling Committee recommended that 5000 or 7000 of the brown trout ova at Clinton be placed in Lake Hawea, the ova to be hatched at Pembroke. The North Canterbury Society had written staUng that it was unable to supply a price for English fish 'tags, and had asked to have forwarded to it any of the fish tags being made locally. It was recommended that a specimen tag be forwarded. The committee recommended further that tags be put on some of the fish in the Leith, the Waikouaiti River, and Lake Hawea. The Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, had forwarded warrants of the appointments of Messrs Tait and Hiddleston, of Mosgiel. as rangers and officers. The inspector of police at Invercargill had replied as to complaints regarding depredations among trout at Pembroke, that the complaint would receive immediate attention. The committee recommended that Mr G. K. Graham (Palmerston) be thanked for his offer to arrange for a meeting of anglers to consider an eel-catching competi-. tion. The committee recommended that 6500 two-year-old trout at the hatchery be liberated as follow: —Tomahawk Lagoon, 1000 Loch Leven, 500 Blagdon, 500 brown; Waikouaiti River, 500 Looh Leven, 250 Blagdon; Pomahaka, 800 Loch Leven, 250 Blagdon; Mimihau, 700 brown trout; Waipahi, 500 brown trout; Wyndham, 500 brown trout; Waitati, 450 Scotch burn trout; Evansdale, 300 Scotch burn trout; Otaraia, 250 Scotch burn trout.— Adopted. , The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £bl ids 3d. There was a credit balance of £57 Bs 3d but out of that two small accounts and a 'contingent boxes had to be paid. There was about £6OO on fixed degosit.-The Chairman mentioned that it hadHoeen recommended that &1W De expended on the culling contract at Hunter Valley. They expected to get this back from this season's licenses.—The report was * It* was resolved that the season for line fishing in Lake Hawea and creeks flowing into it be opened on November 1. An expression of sympathy was passed to Mr Black over the loss he has recently sustained in the death of his sister.
