WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Fkom Oob Own Coebespondent.) August 21. Trentham Btables are probably more strongly represented in the New Zealand Cup this season than in any previous year. The list includes Menelaus, Mascot, Motuihi, Soninmo, Risingham, Bonny Maid, Battle Song, Pink, and Russet. Mr .F. Dorset did not make the journey from Masterton to Riccarton to see Sir Solo compete. Trainer G-arrett returned here yesterday, and walked the gelding through to Opaki. Ho told me that he specially trained the gelding for the Riccarton race, which he was naturally anxious to win after his three previous tries. Sir Solo cost his owner 30sovs as a yearling, and has to date won 6070sovs. H. Gray hurried home from Christchurch to make arrangements for his trip to Australia. It is some years since he rode on the other side, but he has not deteriorated as a horseman in any way in the meantime. He may get away, to Sydney to-day. Rebckah broke down on the concluding day of the Grand National meeting, and will require a lengthy spell. This was bad luck for her owner, as she would probably have turned out a high-class middle distance performer this season. Mr Corry, who was on a business visit to Wellington to-day, informed your correspondent that he had disposed of Good Hope for 30gs. Since he raced as a two-year-old Good Hope had been a big disappointment. Several New Zealand Cup candidates are engaged at the- Marton and Dannevirke meetings, which are to be held early next month. Volo, Affectation, Rose Pink, and -Russet are in at Marton, and Rose Pink, Lucid, Sweet Tipperary, Red Apple, Rose Wreath, and Warlike at Dannevirke. Mr T. E. Welch, owner of Merrie Lad, purchased Red Cent at the conclusion of the National meeting. The All Red gelding has been engaged in hunters', hurdle, and steeplechase events at Dannevirke. It is reported that H. Gray is going to Australia for a holiday trip, and that G. Harrison, the Victorian horseman, will ride the members of Messrs Stead and Richmond's team. Form Up and Loyal Arch were walked home to_ Tauherenikau from Wellington, the trip taking two days. Sleight of Hand has been engaged in the open steeplechase event at the Dannevirke meeting. The gelding has not shown any form for some time, and if started at Dannevirke it will only be because his owner is a resident of the district.
