BANNOCKBURN.

August 15.--After a period of heavy frosts followed by beautiful sunny days, the weather underwent a change,' and several rain showers occurred. There is now a feeling of spring in the atmosphere. Peace Celebrations. —Our peace celebrations, although lacking enthusiasm experienced at the signing of the armistice, were nevertheless of an enjoyable nature. The lengthy procession, in charge of Private T. Crabbe and headed by the local band, paraded tho main thoroughfares. Several of those taking part were in fancy costumes, which gave a touch of festiveness. On arrival at the hall an ample luncheon was disposed of, at the conclusion of which several toasts wore proposed and responded to. In the afternoon there were sports and football, and in the evening a concert and dance were held. Tho next day was tho children's day, when there were races # for all. each child receiving a gift of a silver coin. Sweets were also provided for_ the children. A huge bonfire was lit at night, when an effigy of tho Kaiser was burned, atfer which there was an effective display of fireworks. On Sunday a special service was held in the hall, the Rev. Mr Rankin

officiating. There -was a lax@9 gathering of residents. Football. —On Saturday, Bth inst., the last of a series of flag matches was held at Bannookhurn, the contesting team being from Clyde. After the thaw the ground was very heavy. Neither aide succeeded in scoring, and the game ended in a draw. Mr A. Orombie acted as referee. Scholastic —The local sohool still remains closed on account of the head teacher's daughter having contracted diphtheria, which is still prevalent in the district. A case of soarletina is reported, and it is to be hoped' that no more cases occur.
