OBITUARY
JUDGE JACKSON PALMER. WELLINGTON, August 13. Chief .Judge Jackson Palmer, of the Native Land Court, died this morning from lethargic encephalitis. He had been ill during the past four months, and for a week his condition had been such that death was not unexpected. He left a widow but no family. Judge Palmer was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1867, and came to the dominion while still an infant. He was educated at Auckland Coliega and Grammar School, and on reaching the" age of 21 years was articled to- the late Mr John Sheehan, formerly Minister of Justice and Native I Minister. Mr Palmer remained with the hon. gentleman for four years, and was then admitted as a barrister and solicitor of •the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Later ho was admitted as barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Samoa, in which, as well as in the Court of the High Commissioner for the Western _ Pacific, and also in New Zealand, he gained wide experience in his profession. Mr Palmer had a talent for literary work, and contributed largely to "Brett's Handy Guide to New Zealand" and other publications. Ho represented Waitcmata in Parliament dur-
