WEST COAST COAL MEASURES.
NEED FOR RAILWAY FACILITIES. WESTPORT, August 13. The Westport Borough Council to-nighi resolved to extend to the Hon. A. M. Myera an invitation to visit Westport and gain for himself first-nand information concerning the coal business on the. Coast. It was mentioned that Messrs Burley Bros., whose coal mine is in the Buller Gorge, have been asked to supply coal for a. Reef ton firm to send to Christohurch. This means coaching the coal six miles to the rail head at Inangahua Junction, railing it from there to Reefton (a distance of 21 miles on an up grade), and .railing it from Reefton to Greymouth (a distance of 48 miles) for despatch to Christohurch; yet Messrs Burley Bros.' mine is only 20 miles from Westport, with six miles of rails laid and only 14- more required with formation to link up the field with Westport. It was regarded as another illustration of the folly in not completing the gap in the Buller Gorge railway. The saving to church in the order mentioned would be 5+ miles by railway and 50 more by sea.
