RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. LOCHELLA wins steeplechase. WINTER CUP WON BY GAZIQUE. (From Our Special Reporter.) First Day—Tuesday, August 12. The Grand National meeting was opened in fine weather, and there- was an excellent attendance despite the restricted railway service-. The track was fast and firm for this time of the year, and Lochella could have improved on the record he established in the Grand National Steeplechase if anything could have thrown out a serious challenge over the last circuit. It was a fine race from a spectacular point of view, as the field gave a good exhibition of jumping. It looked as if there would bo a good fight at the finish, but Lochella had the race won when he drew out again from Master Lupin after crossing the kennels doubles. Merry Lad and Dardanelles were outpaced from the start, and Morecambe, after going well for about two miles, gradually dropped away through lack of condition. The others were well up and handy to Loohella if they wero good enough to win. Kilboyne ran a good race in the Winter Cup for about seven furlongs, and both Rebekah and Cerberus made a good show until well inside the distance, where Gaziquo took charge. If he had been better placed in the early part Gold Kip would have won, as he finished much stronger than the winner. The investments on the Grand National Steeplechase totalled £10,805 and on the Winter Cup £12,696. Coalition and Manawapango were the only horses to disappear from, the field in the card for the Grand National Steeplechase, which proved to be a splendid betting race. Lochella carried £2OO more than Waimai whilst Bon Reve carried about £IOO less than Waimai. Master Strowan, M aster Lupin, and Vascular were also strongly supported. The two Dunedin horses—Lochella and Morecambc —at _ once became prominent, with all the field jumping well until Polthogue failed at the kennels double. Morecambe commenced to tire after the first circuit, and Lochella was bowling along well as they began the last mile. Master Lupin, who was always well up, Bon Revo, Waimai, Master Strowan, and Vascular were running in a bunch behind the leader. Master Lupin looked likely to get on terms with Lochella as they crossed the kennels double, but the latter drew out again going to the second last fence, whilst Bon Reve, Master Strowan, Vascular, and Waimai commenced to lose ground. Waimai tipped out at the second last fence, and Lochella, coming on strongly, won by a dozen lengths from Master Lupin, who beat Master Strowan by 15 lengths, with Bon Reve a length away fourth. A good distance back came the easing-up Merry Lad, Vascular, and Dardanelles. The winner looked particularly -well in the birdcage, and put up a nexv time record for the race. He is the first Dunedin-owned and trained chaser to win the National Steeplechase since Katerfelto won in 1882. His final work and the pleasing appearance won Lochella a host of friends at the eleventh hour. Bon Reve pulled up lame. He looked to have a good chance a mile from home, but tho race proved that Lochella was much too good for the opposition at the weights. Leaping Burn was. left when the barrier rose in the Winter Cup, and Kilkee and Borodino were slow to begin, and lost a lot of ground. Rebekah soon took charge with Cerberus, followed by Kilboyne and Form Dp. Rebekah and Cerberus led Kilboyne into the straight. Gazique had taken charge inside the distance, and Gold Kip, making up a lot of ground, came with a good run, but just failed to get up, Gazique winning by a head. Rebekah was jtwo lengths away third, followed by Cerberus, Hiero, and Kilboyne. Kilkee put in a great run, and finished close up with Kilboyne and Potentiality. The card was concluded in a bad light, and after a delay at the post it was difficult to distinguish the field as they ran for the Avonhead Handicap. Tama Aroa was first out, but Birkenfield soon ran past, and won easily. Black Mountain was a fair third in a strung-out field. The totalisator investments were as compared with £60,401 on the first day of the two days' meeting last year. Time, lmin 30 2-ssec. Second Day—Thursday, August 14. The second day's card of the Grand National meeting was got off in fine weather, antl there was again a large attendance. Tile' track was faster than on tho opening day. and there was no wind in evidence either to assist or hinder fast times. Sir Solo was kept busy in the Grand National Hurdles, as he was in charge from end to end after Rewi Poto was steadied in the first furlong. Rewi Poto was going well when he came down. Paraoa was travelling well when they were turning for home, but Sir Solo outstayed him. Art lost his rider through interference from Cynic Omahu did not run up to expectations, but Signature ran a fair race. Both Art and Rewi Poto would have been dangerous but for accidents. Tho winner made a fresh record for the race since it was. extended to its present distance, and" clipped one second off Kauri King's gallop last year. Tigerland was the only withdrawal from the Grand National Hurdles, which proved a good betting race. Omahu finished up a slightly better favourite than Paraoa, whilst Rewi Poto was a good third. Sir Solo soon took charge, and had Jeannot with him as they turned into the straight the first time. Passing the stand, Sir Solo and Jeannot were leading a bunched lot,- with Multive bringing, up the rear. Rewi Poto fell heavily when lying third at the hurdle near the mile and a-quarter post, and Art lost his rider at the second last hurdle. Turning for home Paraoa moved up to Sir Solo, and they crossed the last hurdle together. In the run homo' Sir Solo stayed best, and won by two lengths. Signature, who was always close up, was five lengths away third, just in front of Cynic, and Omahu and Master Moutoa came next, several lengths away. Multive came down at the last jump. Noae of the unseated riders was hurt. Sir Sblo's win was well received, and horse and rider were greeted with applause as they came into the birdcage. The Sir Laddo gelding was making his fourth attempt in the race, and was placed in each of his previous starts. During the day the stewards held an inquiry into some bumping, by which Form Up and Parisian Diamond suffered in the Winter Cup, but did not find evidence to show that anyone was guilty of intentional interference. The totalisator handled £54,680, as against £67,214 on the second day last year. Results: WOOLSTON HANDICAP, Of 200sovs. Six furlongs. I—Moorabbe,1 —Moorabbe, 10.7 (C. Time, lmin 42 2-ssec. Thuid Day—Saturday, August 16. Tho Grand National meeting was concluded in fine weather. The attendance appeared to be equally as good as that of the opening day. A disappointing field went to the post for the _ Lincoln Steeples, in which Master Lupin ended his career, and Gang 'Awa gave a very faint-hearted display. Hegarty made a big difference with Merrio Lad in the manner in which he was handled. There is a great difference of opinion concerning the eligibility of both Sonny and Winslow for the Hunters' Plate, but the weight of opinion, however, appears to be against the decision of the stewards. Sonny had not competed over, either hurdles or fences prior to the tim e of entry and in fact had not started in a race until running at the Christ-church Hunt meeting, the day following the nomination date for the National meeting. Borodino was first out in the Heathcote Handicap, but Lionskin and Rebekah soon ran to the front and led to the distance, both being under pressure. All Over and Risingham took charge, and were fighting it out when Gold Kip came with a run and got up in time to win by a head from Risingham, who beat All Over by a head. Potentiality was placed fourth and Borodino next. Bellshire was handy with the leaders at the turn, but retired with them when All Over and Risingham put in their challenge. Red Cent and Tip Up set a solid pace in the Styx Hurdles, and were closely attended by Reformation, the trio being well clear of the others going along the back. Red Cent dropped back after hitting the third last hurdle. Reformation joined Tip Up, the pair going in company to the last hurdle, which the former hooked and nearly came down. Tip Up was left in charge, and stalling off a strong challenge from Wild Pilgrim, won by a head. Master Moutoa was four lengths away, followed by. Red Cent. The Sydenham Hurdles was a close betting race between the first three favourites. Paraoa. struck heavily at the second hurdle and unshipped his rider. Signature and Jeannot wore showing the way to Sir Solo and Art going- along the back, with the others a good distance back. Omahu moved up as they raced towards the home turn, where Art was in trouble, and Sir Solo, taking charge, went on to win by four lengths from Signature, who beat Omahu by five lengths, with Art next. Mosfc'T Lupin was sore when he went out favourite for tho Lincoln Steon-les and showed signs of deep trouble after completing a circuit, when lie was *>ulled up. Gang 'Awa led Merrio Lad until the stand double, where tho latter commenced to draw away. Gang 'Awa fell heavily at the sod wall, a mile from home, and this left Merrie Lad to run home 250 vards in front of Polthoguo, "who showed neither pace nor fencing ability. The win on Merrie Lad saw L. Hegarty cormolete the hat trick over fences and ho received an ovation. The winner's form was, however, a very marked improvement on his display in the Grand National Steeples when ridden by

J. Roach. Master Lupin broko a hind leg and was shot. Tamaroa and Imaribbon, in company, led the Redcliff field into the straight. Once inside the distance Imaribbon went on to win comfortably by two lengths from Tamaroa, who stalled off Black Mountain, and beat him by half a length for second place. Glenshine and' Sapper were next. The favourite, Strayshot, was prominent in the early part of the Selwyn Handicap, and then faded out. Kilboyn e led Redshire into the straight and at the distance Form Up joined in. Form Up oame on to win bv two lengths from Redshire, who beat Borodino by two lengths. Then came Post Haste and Kilboyne. The machine handled £56,828 10s, making £167,341 for the meeting, as against £127,645 at the two days' gathering last year.
