HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors was held on Thursday} present—Messrs T. K. Sidey, M.P. (chairman), John Ross, J. M. Gallaway, H. Webb, J. C. Stephens, W. R. Brugh, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. The Rector of the Boys' High School (Mr W. J. Morrell) reported that the total number of boys now upon the school roll was 475, of whom 141 were eeniora, 310 juniors, and 24 paying pupils (including ono paying pupil absent the whole term through illnessi.). The corresponding totals for August, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, ajid 1018 were respectively 357, 377. 428, 427, and 450. The Inspectors of Secondary Schools (Messrs T. R. Oresswell and E. J. Parr) visited the school on 1 Monday and Tuesday, July 28 and 29, with the view mainly of inquiring into the work and proficiency of those pupils who are candidates for senior free places, at the expiration of their second year. As a result of their visit 84 boys were recommended by him (the rector) and accepted 15y the inspectors, for the award of a senior free place without examination, subject to a satisfactory report at the conclusion of the school year. The Lady Principal of the Girls' High School (Miss F. M. Allan) reported that the roll number for this month was 363—■ 126 senior free pupils, 226 junior frea pupils, and 11 paying pupils; nine girls had left since last month, three to enter educational or commercial positions, one on account of ill-health, and five for domestio reasons. The roll numbers for the corresponding month in 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, and 1918 were respectively 205, 227, 236, 305, 349. Messrs Cresswell and Parr visited the school on July 17 and 18, and, after testing the candidates for senior free places and inquiring into the recommendations, selected the pupils to be granted free places without further examination. Accounts amounting to £2123 0s 9d were passed for payment. The bank accountj after allowing for the month's account*, showed" a debit balance of £1495 7s 2d.
