(Feom Oue Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGHLLi, January 18. The stock market is very flat at present, this being largely due to shortage of feed, present and prospective, and of large entries of store stock, both sheep and cattle, yarded for the various sales, of which many had to be removed unsold. The opening of the works in about a fortnight should greatly reduce the numbers of sheep and cattle and reduce the demand for feed, audi so improve the prospects for stores, but at present holders of store cattle cannot get the prices they paid for them in the spring. The only sales worthy of note during the week have been of a few lines of ewes and lambs, but it is expected that before long business will be doing in two-tooth wethers. Prices are nominally: Fat Cattle.—Prime bullocks, £l9 10s to £2l 10s; medium, £l6 to £lB 10s; lighter, £l3 to £ls; prime heifers, £l2 10s to £l4; prime cows, £l3 10s to £ls 10s; medium, £lO 10s to £l2 10s. Only a few fat lambs sold at from 24s to 25s 6d. Store Cattle. —Three-year-old steers, in good condition, £l2 10s to £l3 10s; medium, £lO 10s to £l2; 18 months to two-year-old, £8 10s to £10; good m.s. yearlings, £5 10s to £6 10s; smaller sorts, £3 to £4 10s; empty cows and heifers, £7 to £9; good dairy cows, up to £ls; medium, £9 10s to £l2. Store Sheep.—Out-of-wool, up to 80s 6d; good four and six-tooth wethers, in forward condition, 31s 6dl to 335; m.s. hoggets, 27s to 28s 6d;- inferior sorts, 22s to 23s 6d. OAMARU STOCK MARKET. GTbom Ooa Own Oobbespondkmt > OAMARU, January 18. The stock market is in an uncertain and unsatisfactory condition. Tin's is due to a variety of causes, the chief of these being the lateness-of the opening of the refrigerat--ing season and a consequent doubt as to what will happen in regard to the capacity of the works to handle stock. Then the lateness of the harvest means that stubble feed will not become available for some time, with the result that there is very little demand for store sheep. The condition of the market was reflected at the weekly sale at the Waiareka yards on Tuesday, when there was a good yarding of sheep, with few buyers among those present. The attendance was well up to the average, But it was composed in the main of onlookers interested mainly in getting an insight into the position. To effect sales a reduction in price had to be accepted, and a considerable part of the yarding remained unsold. Business by private treats' has been exceedingly slow during the following week, but some sales were made at the following prices:—-Full and failing-mouthed ewes, in the wool with lambs, 235; two-tooth shorn ewes, 32s 6d; shorn two-tooth wethers, 27s to 295; shorn rnixed-sex hoggets, 28s. Some business lies boon done in lambs for forward delivery at 22s and thereabouts. Sales of cattle have been few and in modest lines, as follows:—Yearling steers, £6; yearling, heifers. £4; oalves, 30s to 40s. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHUECH, January 15. At the Addington maiket there were larger entries in most departments than those of the week before. Store sheep were especially backward, and all sorts of wethers and lambs of all classes were easier. In conseqence of the dry weather and the short rape crop, fat lambs that were well finished were very firm. Fat cattle were easier and more business was done for export. Fat sheep met with a good sale, but at a range

of prices a shade under lest week. There was a mod-irate demand for store cattle, and pigs of all classes sold well. Store Sheep.—Two-tooth wethers, 26s 6d; two-tooth wethers, 23s Gd to 26s 6d; four and six-tooth wethers, 27s 7d to 28a 9d; four and six to eight-tooth wethers, 27s Id to 295; merino wethers, 15s; rape lambs, 16s 3d to 21s lid; mixed-sex lambs, 14s 9d to 18s Id.

'ijuADE WITH AMERICA. The Director-general of the Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce- has notified Chambers of Commerce that cabled advice has been received from the British Ambassador at Washington that "any prohibitions against importation of tallow (casks), hides, skins, undressed, fur skins, and rabbitskins have been withdrawn," and that it is understood that the Government of the United States now propose to grant licenses for importation of New Zealand hemp without limit as to the quantity.

SMALL COTTON CROP, BUT RECORD PRICES. This year America's cotton crop was the smallest in nine years. It was more than a million bales less than in the two preceding years, and more than three million bales below the record crop of 1914-15. But this falling off in production, together with the fact that cotton is relatively the cheapest textile in a world short of most kinds of raw products, was responsible for a level of prices not reached in 50 years, and an estimated total value not attained in any previous 12 months. The last cotton crop in America was valued at £104,000,000 more than that of the preceding year, and nearly three times the value of the commercial crop of the first year of the war. Cotton sold to Is 6d a lb in New York his year, while there havesboeii yeans when the price was slightly below 3d a lb. Eleven Southern States in America furnish the great bulk of the world's cotton supplies. For every bale of cotton produced weighing approximately 5001 b the yield of lint is 1451 b. This lint was essential in the making of high explosives and smokeless powder, and of absorbent cotton so much used in the military hospitals. The value of cotton as a food crop is iapt to be overlooked. For every bale of cotton tkexe> is produced 10001 bof ■essential foodstuffs. Approximately 60 per cent, of all edible oils have cotton-seed oil a 3 their foundation.

' The cotton crop is on© which has to be harvested without the aid of machinery, fo» a 3 cotton does not ripen all at one time it has not been possible to produce a practical machine to do the picking. It is estimated that the cost of taking the crop out of the field is 4d a lb. "NEW ZEALAND REFRIGERATING CO. (LTD.).
