PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The ordinary meeting 1 of the Council of the Otago Sooiety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on the 14th. Mr George Fenwick, who presided, was warmly welcomed back. The Inspector, in his annual report to tho sqciety, stated that 101 cases of alleged cruelty to animals had been inquired into during the year. Ten persons were not proceeded against for want of evidence, 50 complaints \\jere investigated, but inquiries made proved that there were no cases against the persons complained of. One man was prosecuted for cruelty and convicted. Forty persons were cautioned for various-offences. Eighteen horses, two cows, and two dogs had been destroyed during the year. He had visited practically all the centres in the Otago district, and had found that the society was becoming more popular than ever. He had received a great deal of assistance in his work from the public throughout his travels. —It was resolved that this report be incorporated in the report to be submitted to the annual meeting of members. In reply to a letter from the Western Australian Society it was decided there would bo no advantage in affiliating with Australian societies.
