SALVAGING THE WAIKABE.

The Manaroa, on her return trip from the north, will remain at Port Chalmers to take on board Messrs Miller Bros.' salvaging party for the West Coast. She will leave Port about the middle of February, and proceed to the spot where the Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Waikare was wrecked. The party will only salvage the gear of the sunken vessel, as it is considered impracticable to raise the vessel. As the Manaroa has been fitted with saloon accommodation,'she will take on board a tourist party, for whose convenience a motor launch is being carried to convey the tourists round the Sounds while the salvaging operations are in progress.

DBOWNED AT SEA. , A Press Association cable frora London states that Captain Clepson, master of the four-masted ship Lancing, which has arrived at Queenstown (Ireland) from' Melbourne, was washed overboard and -dlrowned during the voyage. The Lancing is of 2546 tons gross register. She sailed from Melbourne on August 24, 1918, and was reported at NewOrleans on December 3.

OVERSEA VESSELS. The liner Orator cleared Wellington on Sunday, 12th inst., for London, via Panama. The C. and D. Line have fixed, the steamer War Opal from New York for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is expected to leave America soon. Cable advice states that the Port Melbourne is about to leave London in ballast for New Zealand, via Panama. She should, therefore, reach the dominion early in March, and will load at New Zealand ports for the United Kingdom. The Port Linooln cleared New York- on January 6 for Auckland, Wellington, and Australia. She is due at Auckland about February 5. The Shaw, Savill liner Matat-ua left London on January 9, in ballast, for Wellington via Panama. She will load at New Zealand ports for the United Kingdom. The Burmah, which left Glasgow on December 13, is to call at Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton, but not Dunedin. " The Burmali is due at Auckland about February 4. The Port Augusta, which left New York on December 26 for Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, via Panama, will call at Wellington for bunker coal about January 30. • • The Port Hacking,- which is due at Wellington on January 31, and Auckland. on February 6, from London, will load at New Zealand ports for a return, trip to London. The Port Lyttelton is duo at Wellington to-day from Auckland and Napier, and will load at Wanganui and leave Wellington on January 30 for Port Said, via Albany and Golombo. The Port Darwin, which reached Sydney on December 30, is at present loading in Australia for Egypt, and is expected to sail from Sydney for the East on January 25. The barquentlne Senorita, is expected to sail > for San Francisco in a few days' time from Auckland. She holds the record for the. longest trip—lß6 days—between Sydney and San Francisco. The American sailer William Olsen, which left San Francisco on December 23, is due at Auckland some time. in February. The Union steamer Whangape arrived at Papeete on January 8 from Auckland. Messrs Neill and Co- advise that the Luckenbach Line placed the Australic on the loading berth at New York on January 17, to take in cargo fox Lytetlton and Dunedin, and possibly Sydney The Ausferailo is a 4010-ton steel vessel, and was birilt in 1907. This will be her first visit to New Zealand. The Mamari, which is due at Auckland about February from Liverpool, left Suez on January 4. The Ulimaroa left Wellington on Saturday morning for London, via Bombay and Suez. The Tahiti, which came out of dock at Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon, will leave for Wellington about January 25. She is due to leave Wellington for Liverpool, via Colombo and Suez, about the beginning of next month. ; :■ The Oxfordshire, en route from Liverpool to New Zealand, left Colombo on January 18, and is due at Auckland on February 2. The Dartford was expected to leave Vancouver on Saturday for Wellington. The Maunganui, which is at present refitting at Port Chalmers, will leave fox London about February. 4. The liner Wiltshire, en route from 'Port Said for Wellington, left Colombo on January 10, and is expected to reach New Zealand about February 4. , The Remuexa, en route from Wellington to London, arrived at Newport News on January 12. The Rimutaka is timed to leave London fox New Zealand ports on February 20. The Hororata will leave London for New Zealand ports about February 4. The local agents Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Messrs J. W. Swift and Co., have received advice that the Verdun is due at Port Chalmers at the end of next week, and will discharge a considerable cargo of coal for the New Zealand Bailways. She will take a cargo of wool outwards. The Commonwealth and' Dominion Line's Port Denison, which will probably load in New Zealand in April for England, was built as recently as May of last year by Workman, Clark, and Co., Belfast. She is a steel twinscrew steamer of 10,334 tons gross (7780 net), 4So.4ft long, 60.3 ft broad, and 32.3 ft deep, and is fitted with the latest engineering and navigating appliances. Her arrival in 'New Zealand ports should create some interest as an exhibit of British war-time production. ■ The Maunganui is to refit at Port Chalmers. The Suevic is not due here till the first week in February. The Ayrshire is due at Auckland on January 24, and will'load at Auckland, Gis borne, and Wellington for Liverpool, via Bombay and Basra She- will leave Wellington about February 12. The Durham, which arrived at Auckland on Friday, will load at Auckland, Napier, and Wellington for Liverpool, via way ports. It is expected that she will leave Wellington about February 4. The Wiltshire, en route from Port Said to Wellington, left Colombo on January 10, and is due»to reach New Zealand with troops about the end of this month. The Tahiti will leave Wellington on February 1 for Liverpool, via way ports.
