OBITUARY.

E. E. C. QUICK. The news which has been received of the death, after a long illness, of Mr E. E. C. Quick at Melbourne will awaken many pleasant recollections of the deceased gentleman in Dunedin, where he had a large circle of friends. Mr Quick lived far beyond the "allotted span," for, having been born in was a native of London., an decided on a naval career, but resigned when an acting chief officer, and came out to Melbourne in 1852 to try his fortune on the goldfields. An affection of the eyes compelled his return to Melbourne. hi I£6o he came to Dunedin, and commenced an importing business. Five years later he paid a visit to England and the United States, and on his return resumed business, finally acquiring the sharcbroking business of his namesake, Mr W. H. Quick, and became aseociated with Mr E. K. Smith in the firm of Quick and famitii. The infirmity of deafness considerably hampered Mr Quick's usefulness long before he left Dunedin; but during a residence of a great many years in this city he was a publiospirited citizen who specially identified himself with philanthropic movements, of which he was a generous supporter. He held a number of vice-consulates, including thoso of Norway and Sweden, Portugal, and Denmark, and for a time was Acting Consul for Chile; he sat in the City Council as a member for South Ward: was a trustee of the Savings Bank, a member of the Atheneeum Committer, and secretary of the Acclimatisation Society. He was a prominent member of the Anglican laity, and occupied a seat in the Synod for over 20 years. Ha was lion, secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for 18 years from 1882 to 1900—and was one of the founders—for sorno years past the sole survivor of them—of the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society. He was at different times a director of several public companies, among which we may specially mention the Otago DaUy Times and Witness Company.
