NEXT ANNUAL MEETING AT DUNEDIN. CHRIS I CHURCH Juno 5. At the annual meetmg ot the Soutn Isiand Dairy Association to-day it was decided that the expenses of the delegates andi committee in connection with the sale nt the outputs of butter and cheese be paid by the South Island Dairy Association; the executive to be authorised to pay them or to make a levy, as deoided by the directors. It was also decided that the association pay the expenses of the South Island representatives who recently visited! Australia in connection with the sales of butter. The following resolution was carried: — "That this conference urge on the Government the necessity for conserving what little timber still remains for New Zealand requirements, and that the export of timber of all sorts be prohibited, and afforestation proceeded with seriously." After a lengthy discussion, in the course of which comment was made on the action of the Otago Military Service Board in dismissing all appeals for butter and cheese factory managers, it was resolved that this meeting of dairymen protest against the continued compulsion applied to competent dairy factory managers and first assistants in opposition to the Efficiency Board's finding that dairying is an essential industry, and recommends that immediate steps bo taken to ensure that enough men are left to carry on the industry; that we thoroughly approve of the letter forwarded to the Minister of Defence, and request his favourable and prompt attention to same, and that a rehearing of the recent cases where appeals were dismissed be authorised. The conference unanimously passed a vote of appreciation of the conduct of the Bluff Harbour Board in dealing with the cool storago question at Bluff. After lengthy discussion a remit asking the association to take into consideration the possibility of purchasing the'Blufß cool stores was withdrawn.

The election of four directors resulted in the return of Messrs T. Parker (Stirling), E. Lord (Canterbury Central), J. R. Thackcr (O'Kains), and J. S. Grieve (Waia"iw a ). June 6.

At an extraordinary general met.-i.iig of the South Island Dairy Association to-day, the proposition that a general meeting of the association shall be held in Dunedin or elsewhere in New Zoaland in May or June of each year, as the directors may from time to time determine, was considered. An amendment was moved providing for the annual general meeting being held in rotation in Christchurch, Invercargill, and Dunedin. After discussion, the _ amendment was negatived and the motion was agreed to. Mr R. Arnott (Wyndham) moved, and Mr J. L. Gilkinson seconded; that the next general meeting bo held at Dunedin. Mr Manson moved, and Mr C. Hayward Shornbury) seconded, an amendment fixing vercargill as the next place of meeting. On a division the amendment was negatived by 19 votes to 14, and the motion was agreed to ►-. On a motion defining the qualifications of a director, an amendment was moved that no person shall be eligible as a director unless he is a director of a co-operative dairy factory or proprietor of a factory. The amendment was negatived, and the motion,was agreed to. A motion was moved by Mr J. C. N. Grigg (Ashburton) suggesting that all directors shall go out of office before next annual meeting, so that there would be a general election, and thus stimulate greater interest in the association's affairs. The chairman ruled that the motion was one that ho could not take. At an extraordinary general meeting it was decided that a meeting to confirm the resolutions amending the articles of association bo held at Invercargill on the 29th inst.
