A SETTLEMENT EFFECTED.. After a lengthy conference between the local branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and the mining companies extending over Saturday and well into Sunday, the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr T, Harle Giles) succeeded in efi'ectiug a settlement of the dispute, and the men who went on strike on Tuesday, 28th ult., resumed work on the 4th inst. It was only tho remarkable tact and diplomacy shown by the Commissioner that brought about this gratifying result, thus averting what might have been a yery serious position, and one fraught with momentous possibilities as far as Waihi, and possibly tho whole dominion, ere concerned.
