TALK OF THE DAY.

By Sentinel THE OAMARU MEETING. The appearance of the handicaps for the North Otago meeting, which is one of the most popular fixtures in the calender,''brings ns another step towards the end of the fast-waning flat-racing season. Rorke’s Drift tops the list in the Oamaru Cup with 9.9, and although ho is a master of weight, the writer is not inclined to give him a chance on recent form over a mile course. In the Timaru Cup ho is meeting Kilboyne on 61b bettor terms, and on the second day’s run at the same meeting meets Battle Eve on 14!b better terms. It is doubtful if the change in poundage would turn the, tables in the top weight’s favour with either of the others. _ Daytime has an Oamaru Cup to his credit, as he carried over 8.0 and won in 1.41 in 1916. Ho won the Craven Plate with 8.7 in 1.26 4-5, beating Battle Eve into third place five and a-helf .lengths away when conceding 121 b, and certainly looks dangerous at 81b worse. Mohawk meets Kilboyne on 101 b better terms than in the Timaru Cup; and should be able to run a good race if he repeats his second day’s form, which saiv him giving Mortham 171 b and run the Rokeby gelding to a neck in the Pareora Handicap. Golden King looks nicely treated' at 8.3, as he won last year with 8.9 when giving Mai’Sa 31b and a boating. Sedd-el-Bahr made no show at Timaru, and has been schooled over hurdles. Thaddeus was a winner at Riverton with 7.11, and a repetition of his best form would entitle him to a chance, whilst of the others Majestikoff and Tremena should help to make matters busy. Acceptances are due on Thursday, May 16.
