UNITED WAR INTERCESSION.

The week of united war intercession scr» vices arranged under the auspices of tho United Christian Council opened with a meeting attended by several hundred people > in First Church on the 13th. Tho service was conducted by the Rev. 0. H. Balfour, who read the fourteenth chapter of Second Chronicles, and spoke narticu'.arly from the words of Asa in tho eleventh verse: “Lord. ‘ it is nothing with Thee to help, whether . with many or with them that have no power; help us, 0 Lord pur God; for we rest on Thee, and in Thy name we go i■' against this multitude. O Lord. Thou art r our God; let not man prevail against Thee.” I They were there, ho said, as a confession of their faith that God was above all and' > in all and through all, and to intercede that He would come and help in time of need and deliver us from the agony of the present struggle. They were there' also to thank God for His guidance in tho past and that still they were strong, hopeful, and united and confident. A time was spent in silent prayer, while special appropriate subjects were suggested by Mr Balfour. . Afterwards petitions were offered by theRevs. W. Gray Dixon, W. Hay, W. Trotter, and R. S. Gray. Before tho meeting closed .Mr Balfonn made reference to the death, on active service. of Chaplain Alexander Allen, of the Methodist Churotu They were proud, he said of tho splendid way the chaplains had served the troops, and even laid down their lives in seeking to help tho men. He expressed the sympathy of the meeting with the bereaved relatives, and also with the Methodist .Church.
