LFbom Gtjb Owv Correspondent.) OAMARU, May 4. The stock market remains exceedingly quiet, and there does not appear to be any likelihood of an improvement for some time, to come. While farmers have generally enough feed to carry present flocks and herds through the winter, no ano has such an abundance as to justify increasing his present responsiblities, especially in view of a possible difficulty in disposing readily of fat sheep. The same conditions are restraining speculators, and consequently sales are intermittent and prices weaker, except for anything of really high quality. Animals coming within that category find ready buyers, but at a lower level of prices than prevailed a few weeks back. Two such lines were dealt with this week—one of two-tooth, ewes at 38s Gd and the other of four-tooth ewes at 40s. Other sales of sheep were:—Mixed four and six-tooth ewes, SGs 6d; sound-mouthed ewes, 275; full and failingmouthed ewes, 18s to 20s; sound-mouthed merino ewes, 14s; mixed sex lambs, 20s and 21s 6d, the top money for a. line in which the sexes were in equal proportions. A few sales of cattle during "the week are reported at the following prices:—Fat bullocks, £18; mixed two to two-year- and a-half old steers, £10; mixed-sex yearlings, £4. Dairy cows are good eelling property, and a line of 18 coming to profit found a buyer at £ll. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 4. During the past week stock eales have been held at Vinton, Thornbury, and Wallacetown, and the market for all classes of 6torc sheep has been slightly easier, this being most noticeable in young ewes, which are hard to quit, The fat eheep market remains unchanged, but

fat cattle arc slightly easier, anil at country sales a big proportion of the stock lias been passed at auction, though a number of vendors are meeting the market and selling at prices below their expectations. Prices may be quoted;—Fat cattle: Extra prima bullocks, £lB to .-£2O 10s; prime, £IG 10s to £l7 15s; medium and light, about £l3 10s; extra primo cows, £IG to £18; prime. £lO to £l3; light and interior, down to £lO 10s; extra prime heifers, £ls 10s to £IG 10s; prime, £ll 10s to £l3 lf>s; medium and light, down to £0 10s; ox beef, 40s; heifer, 43a; cow, 42s Gd. ADDINOTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTOHTTRCH, May 1. At tho Addington stock market to-day there was a decrease in tho total number ot stock offered, a'l departments, except fat sheep, showing a falling off, the cold sou-weser no doubt being mainly responsible for tins decreases. Store sheep met with fair competition for better classes, but inferior oescriptions (of which a large proportion of tho "yarding was formed) were- dull of sale. Fat lambs were easier, on account of tno quality not being equal to that of late sales, the lambs being mostly medium and light weights. The fat sheep market was very firm. The High Commissioner's report, dated London, May 4, states : Meat. —The market conditions are unchanged. Regulated supplies are at maximum fixed price-.-. Butter.—The market remains unchanged. Stocks in cold store are heavy, but release is restricted in order to meet the demand. Cheese. —The demand is in excess of the supply. Business is being dono under Government control. ■Wheat. —More offering by order of the Government. There is no change in prices. Oats. —Tho market is quiet and offerings small, with no change in prices. CHRISTOHURCH MARKETS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 7'. Tho accumulation of stocks of produce awaiting shipment is now beginning to have an effect on the local market. It is stated that there are 400 loaded trucks at Lyttelton and the stores are all full, consequently any lines of grain and produce that find their outlet in the north are now becoming more difficult of sale, and then only at reduced rates. Oatshoaf chaff and potatoes, especially, are affected, and oats to some extent. There is no demand for further supplies of chaff at present, as local merchants are overstocked. The samo may be said of potatoes, the prieo of which has declined to about £5 10s at country stations. There is not only a scarcity of shipping, but there appears to be a considerable delay when a, vessel does arrrive in port owing, it i 3 said, to tho shortage of men. Trio time lost in this way would very soon equal tho voyago of a vcs-scl to Auckland and back" Wheat is still offering steadily, and is taken readily by those millers who still have unfilled .warrantsPALMERSTON STOCK SALE. Tho Palmerston monthly stock sale was held on Monday last, when there waj a much smaller yarding than for tho April sale.
