HIS CONDITION SERIOUS. ' y WAIMATE, March 8. A young Maori named Mason Boko wat brought to Waimate Hospital to-day with a bullet in his head. He informed tho police that ho had been drinking with one Charles Boyes at the latter's house near Morven, seven milce from here. The police have bein out all afternoon in quest of Boyes. who is alleged to have fired the shot. Later. Dr Pitts has just operated on Boko, and the bullet has been traced from a cheek wound at .the edge of tho mouth, through to the back of the neck, but it has not yet) been extracted. His condition is serious. The Maori's version is that he and Boyes were drinking and were playing cards. At 11 o'clock the Maori said he was going home. Boyes turned nasty, and let off a revolver at him. Boyes's own story is that he was showing the Maori what' he would do to the police the next time he met them, and the revolver was accidentally discharged. ■ March B._ Charles Boyes was arrested yesterday in connection with tho wounding of Mason, Boko, and was charged tb.ia morning with shooting with intent to do grievous/bodily harm. He was remanded for ono week, and bail was refused. Tho wounded ma'i was again operated on, and the revolver bullet extracted. yA few days must elapse before tho doctors can state- what his chances of recovery are.
