March 2. —After a long- spell of dry weather a welcome rain set in <?n Monday night, and continued at intervals throughout -Tuesday. Hie weather is again fine. Auction Sale.—At Queenstown last week Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (per Mr T. J. Cotter) held an auction sale 9! the properties of the late Mr Julius Wenkheira. Lot 1 (sections with residence thereon) was bought by Mr T. M'Sorily, and Lot 2 (sections 11 and 26. town of Queenstown) was knocked down to Mr J. S. Collins. Lot 3 (sections at Kingston) failed to bring a bid. Valedictory.—Mr o.' A. Kennedy, home missionary, who has for the past two years been pastor of the Arrow Presbyterian Church, and .who is leaving next. week to enter Knox College, Dunedin, was entertained at a. farewell social by the members of the church last evening. The Moderator (Rev. R. O. Hunter, M.A., Queenst own) presided, and there_ was a large attendance. During the evening presentations wrjo made to Mr and Mrs Kennedy. Mr William Reid, on behalf of the members of tho Arrow Presbyterian Church, presented Mr Kennedy with a substantial cheque, and Miss Edwards, on behalf of the lady members, presented Mas Kennedy with a silce.-cake-dish. Mr Reid ref erred to the able and faithful manner m which Mr Kennedy had carried out his duties in connection with tho church, an 1 wished him every success in the future. The Rev. Mr Hunter alsb boro testimony to the good work accomplished by Mr Kennedy while in Arrowtown. Mr Kennedy feelingly replied. At intervals the choir contributed items, and solos were given by Messrs C. Ross, D R. Barron, and Reeves (a visitor), ducts by Mrs J. G. Allan and Miss Tuft, and Misa-is Toll and Anderson, and a quartet by Misses Toll and Anderson and Messrs W. .'Stevenson and Stewart. Supper was provided by tho ladies of the congregation.—On Thursday evening the Gibbston people entertained Mr Kennedy at a social in the sohoolhouse. There was a large attendance. Mr Joseph Miller, who presided, presented Mr Kennedy with a cheque subscribed by his Gibbston friends. Roll of Honour. —News was received on Monday that Private D. J. Cosgrove, son of Mr and Mrs J. Cosgrove, Arrow Junction, had been admitted to hospital on (February 11, . suffering from a gunshot wound in the right shoulder. Private Cosgrove was previously wounded on August 16 last. Licensing Committee Election. —The nominations of candidates for members of the Wakatipu Licensing, Committee closed at Queenstown to-day at noon. Only three nominations were received for the five seats —viz., Messrs Arthur Ford (Glenorchy), G. F. Johnston (Lumsden), and James Mackenzie (Cromwell). Messrs Ford and Johnston’were members of the old committee.
