RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

V.R.'C. AUTUMN MEETING. . NEWMARKET WON BY CETIGNE, First Day—Saturday, March 2. The Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting ■was held to-day. In many aspeots this Newmarket Handicap day was the most remarkable for many years. Besides the attraction of the presence of New Zealand's champion, the fact that it was the most open Newmarket probably in the history of the race created added interest. A few days before the race the business in the Victorian clubs exceeded for one day the busiest period in the club's history. Half of the horses in the race attracted a spirited business. This feeling was reflected on the course when, an hour and a-half before the meeting opened, the ring was humming like a beehive. . The morning opened! with an intensely hot suu, but thunder clouds banked up, and the Newmarket event was finished in a heavy thunderstorm. Results: PINES HUHDKE RACE. Two miles.— Kinlark 1, Single Barrel 2, Katwyk 8. Twenty-cme started. Won by a short head; a neck separating second and third. Time, 3inin 48Jsec. ST. DEGER STAKES, of lOOOsovs. One mile and three-quarters.—Prince Viridis 1, Bronzetti 2, Broken Glass 8. Also started: Thrice and Duntulm. Prince Viridis was never headed. Bronzetti ran, into second place at the mile past, and then came Thrice, with Broken Glass next. Half a mile from home Prince Viridis had a, three-lengths' lead. Bronzetti reduced the distance before the turn was reached, and. a great race up the straight ensued, Prince Viridis getting the verdict by half a head, the third horse being four lengths away. Amanus and Aniadis were scratched. The first to break the line was Pah King, with Panacre and Wedge next. After a furlong had been covered' Pah King, Wedge, Petracia, aoid Poil-rina had a clear advantage. Poitrina appeared to lead into the course proper from Cetigne, Pah King, Wedge, and Hoprig. At the distance Petracia on the rails and) Wedge on the extreme outside seemed to be contesting the finish, when Cetigne seemed to b© drawing away, and after an exciting race won by half a length, Wedge a neck away, and Petracia fourth. BRUNSWICK STAKES. On© mile and a-quarter.—Defence 1, Semi Play % Red Pennant 3. There were 16 starters. Deneb led in the early stages, then Parivale. Sir Amyas led into the straight. Defence, with a strong run, drew away without difficulty and won by three lengths. Time, 2min 15£sec. MELBOURNE, March 3. The racing was particularly good . in the first four races. The downpour after the Newmarket Handicap converted the betting ring into a lake, and rain thereafter was continuous and spoilt The hurdle race provided one of the best'contests seen at Flemington, as, turning into the straight, Lady Reigle, Katawok, Kinlark, and Single Barrel were almost on terms. A desperate finish drew cheers from the big crowd. The St. Leger provided another hardfought finish. At the distance Bronzetti looked to have Pince Viridis safe, but the latter was well ridden and again drew cheers from the crowd by his half-head, win. The Newmarket provided exciting race. After the course proper was entered as usual, with the horses coming head on right across the course, experts could not feel sure of the leaders. The struggle from the distance aroused the crowd to an intense pitch of excitement. The running was sloppy for the youngsters in the Sires' Produce Stakes,- though fair tinie wfla made. ..■■.'.
