A cable message to the Australian papers, dated 7th in?t., states that Vincent Keiran, aged 21, was charged at Westminster with wearing the Australian uniform. Evidence was given that defendant came from Australia' in April, fearing conscription. He stayed for some months in Ireland, and now claimed that ho could not be conscripted, as he was not a resident of Britain of six months' standing. Ho was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labour. Wages are said to have risen during the war, but from a paragraph in the Hawke's Bay Tribune this does not seem to .apply in the case of clerks. The 34 applicants for a clerical position in the Napier Harbour Board's office ranged in ago from 21 to 48, snd from the details they supplied it is evident that there is ample room for an improvement in th-3 pay of clerks. The wage offered was £4 a week, yet one ap plicant wanted only 555. Many of the men are working for largo firms, yet they were eager for the job.
