WHITE PINE SUPPLIES.
PROTEST AGATNST GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS. HOKITIKA, February 20. The Westland Chamber of Commerce had under consideration last night the direction issued bv the Government to Commissioners of Lands and wardens advising them when granting timber-cutting leases or licenses, to make the stipulation that no white pine timber shall be exported from the dominion, but thr.t it shall be reserved for the purposes of the New Zealand aairvin« industry exclusively. Strong exception was taken to the course proposed. It was stated that the prohibition was being lire <rularlv enforced, and was contrary to recommendations of the Forestry Commission and the evidence tendered by tho Board of Trade on the subject, Tt was resoly.ed to ask' the Government to withdraw the instructions to their officers, and a sub-committee was set up to prepare reasons in support of this request. It waa also decided to ask other chambers to cooperate, pointing out that prreat waste as well as increased cost would result, and under strinsrmt regulations timbor would' not be available for fruitgrowers.
