SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Ouk Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, February 25. Business in all olasses of stock continues brisk, especially in store sheep. The local demand for ewes and lambs is very good at present and likely to continue firm for some time to come. Fat stock is ; if anything, a shade firmer than a fortnight ago, the idea being prevalent that buyers of this class will be able to give somewhat higher prices than ii was expected the market would settle to a few weeks back. Freezing men arc working hard to nil their requirements, and a good quantity of lambs and rape ewes are gomg to feed. Given another month's good weather we should see a lavge quantity of fat sheep going into the works. Tussock ewes have continued fa-m, a good number of this class of sheep being sold to go north at up to 33s 6d to 34s a head. Store cattle are a little easier as -the autumn approaches, but prices must be regarded as satisfactory for this time of the year. However, if any class declines in price it will undoubtedly be store cattle. So far as this province is concerned, winter feed seems to be assured, and if this hope is realised the demand for store stock will be good for some tuny to come. There was again a large attendance, especially store sheep buyers. The late rain improved the demand for^store sheep, the entry of which included consignments from the .north, the Chatham Islands, and the West Coast. Prices were firm at late rates, and lambs, if anything,, showed a little improvement in value. Fat lambs opened firmer, -but went back to last week's rates. Fat cattle met with a goodl sale, the yarding being a moderate one, and chiefly made up of cows and heifers., the former showing some advance in price. Exporters again found that values were beyond their limits. Fat sheep were very firm at prices above export level, the market easing towards the end. THE CO-OPERATIVE FRUITGROWERS OF OTAGO (LTD.), E. OSWALD REILLY, MANAGER. Moray place, Dunedin. PRICE OF WHISKY. Somo rather unexplainable anomalies are apparent in the prices of whiskies. For instance, case wh;sky is quoted in Dunedin to-day at 45s to 50s, in bond, but in the North Island a case of the same quality whisky costs 62s 6d, in bond. As, however, most of tho case whisky is sold under what may be termed " provincial agencies," merchants do not try to push business in another merchant's province. Moreover, if a speculator, for -instance, tried to purchase whisky in the cheaper southern market for the purpose of selling it in the dearer northern market, ifc is said that means would soon be adopted to prevent him from repeating his performance with that particular brand. In London bulk whisky is worth 100 s a case, in bond, and about 150 s when all the duties have been paid. This fact naturally prompts the question how bulk whisky is worth in Dunedin to-day only from 32s to 365, In bond, according to quality. Merchants say they cannot explain this_ difference in cost, save that the Imperial Government may have decided, in tho interests of the oversea trade, to allot the distilleries a certain quantity of barley to bo manufactured into whisky, this whislcv to be sold to tho dominions at a specified price.
