DEATH OF IMt BSOFOBD. The unexpected death by drowning at Whangarei of Dr H. D. Bedford, Professor of History and Economics at the Otago University, has caused general regret, and has drawn expressions of sympathy from all parts of the Dominion, and also from outside. Feeling references to the sad event have been made at the meetings of all public and local bodies in and about Dunedin, including the United Christian Council. City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Harbour Board, Technical School Governors, University Council, delegates of industrial unions, and-many others. The body was brought to Dunedin, and the funeral took place on Monday, the 25th inst. There was a large and thoroughly representative gathering at Trinity Methodist Church (where an impressive service was held) and also among those who followed the remains to their last restingplace in the Northern Cemetery. A feeling address was delivered by the Rev. R. S. Gray, who referred to the death as a national loss, and seemed an irreparable loss. The speaker referred to the deceased's wide knowledge, a lover of the nation an 3 of the people; he also loved Christ because he loved the people. He spoke of the beauty of his home life and its simplicity. He concluded by saving that it would be a comfort to those who loved him best to think that his work was being done even here, and that we should not forget how he pleaded wivh us as a city and as a nation to build not for the present but for the hereafter. The Revs. A. W. Kinmont and J. Dawson conducted the service at the graveside.
