Mr A. Shepherd, Waimaie writes:—The following game might be of interest to those who have been studying the position which occurred between Messrs O'Malley and Diack, Inveroargill. This game was played between Messrs J. P. Bleed and C. F. Barker.

THE SCOTTISH TOURNEY. The annual championship tournament of the Scottish Draughts Association was begun on New Year's Day at the City Halls, Glasgow, in the presence of a large gathering of members of the association and spectators. Bailie A. Smith, Coatbridge, occupied the chair, and referred to the lass the association had sustained by the death of Mr James Beans, of Shotts, who had taken a great Interest in the annual tournament. He intimated that there were 27 competitors. The following details are from the Glasgow Weekly Herald. Burns and Nelson, from 11 16, 22 18, "Single Corner," developed the following position:— Black (Nelson): 1, 12, 21, 22. 26. White (Burns): 5, 15, 19, 20, 32. Black played 26 22, etc., and towards the end got into difficulties, and Burns scored) a win. When play was resumed in the evening nine boards were set agoing, Ginn and Lees having re* tired in favour of Collingwood and Rogers. Bonar and Dunbar opening with 10 15, 23 19, called a 23 19 "Kelso," developed the following position:—Black: 2,8, 5,6, 11, 14, 15, 16. White: 13, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25. 26. 27. White (Dunbar) to play:—26 22, 14 18, 23 14, 69, 13 6,2 18, 21 17, Black wins. Duncan and Robertson, from 11 15, 22 17 opening, had the following position:—Black: 1,3, 5,6, 7, 11, 12, 21. White: 13. 14, 19. 24, 25. 27, 30, 32. White (Robertson) to play:—27 23, 6 9, 13 6, 1 17, 24 20, 7 10. 25 22, 17 26. 19 16, 12 19, 23 7, 26 31, 7 2, 10 14, 2 6. 14 18, 0 10, 18 23, 10 14, 31 26, 14 17, 3 8, 17 14, 26 22, 14 10, 8 11, 10 7, 11 15, 7 10. 15 IS, 10 15, 5 9, 15 19, 9 13, 19 17, 13 22—draw agreed upon. Second Day.— The proceedings were opened by Dr O'Neil, M.P. for South Armagh and county councillor for Lanarkshire. . He is a good draxights player and the acknowledged champion in the Hcusp of Commons. In a brief speech ho expressed the fear that the time 3 they were passing through would militate against the game, but he was glad to observe so many player 3 and spectators. Provost Moore, of Dornoch, also spoke. M'Kelvie was the first to score from Burns from a "Fife" opening (11 15, 23 19). The position was:— Black: 3. 7,8, 9, 10, 13. White: 12, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24. Black to play:—B 11, 12 8, 8 12, 24 19, 9 14, 18 9, 11 15, 9 6, 15 24, 0 2. A few more move.s and Black resigned.

Bonar and Scott opened with 24 20 "Denny." They reached the- following interesting position:—Black: 9, 10, 11, 12. 13, 18. White: 19, 20, 21, 20, 26, 27. White. (Scott) to play:— 20 16, 11 20, 26 22, 20 2-1, 22 6, 24 31, 6 1, drawn. When play wa& resumed in the evening seven boards were set. agoing. Campbell having failed to turn up, Hulme passed into the third round. M'Gowan and Morrison, opened 11 16, 23 19 "Irregular." M'Gowan won from the following position:—Black: 2, 3,6, 7, 10, 11, 14. 20. White: 13, 16, 21, 23, 2G, 29, 81, 32. Black (M'Gowan) to play: 20 24, 16 12, 11 15, 32 23, 7 11, 23 19, 15 24, 29 25, 24 28, 25 22, 11 15, 22 18, 15 22, 26 17, 28 82, 23 19, 14 18, 17 14, 10 17, 21 14, 18 26, 14 9, 82 28, 19 16, 28 24, 16 11, 23 27, 11 8, 27 32, 95, 24 19. After a number of moves White resigned. M'-Kelvie scored his second win from Burns. Position: Black: 2,6, 7, 12, 18, 14, 20. White; 15, 21, 26, 26, 27, 28, 81. Black (Burns) .to play; 14 18, 26 22, 7 10, 15 11, 10 15, 31 26, 6 10, 26 23, 10 14, 28 24, 13 19, 24 15, 20 24, 27 20, 18 27, 11 8, 27 81, 88, 81 27, 15 10, 27 23, 3 8, 14 17, 21 14, 28 26, White wins. Allan and Collingwood' contested 11 16, 22 17 "Dyke," when the following position was arrived at:-—Black: 1,7, 10, 11, 14, 20, 22. White: 6, IS, 19, 21, 28, 31, 32. Black (Collingwood) to play:—l4' 17, 21 14, 10 17, 6 2, 22 26, 31 22, 17 26. 19 16, 26 31, 16 12, 31 26, 12 8, 26 23, 8 3, 7 10, 27, 10 14, 7 16, 14 17, 3 8, 17 22, 8 12, and Collingwood', the champion, wes forced to resign'. Third Day.— The opening ceremony was performed by Mr Gavm Ritchie, a noted veteran of the game, who extended a welcome to the visitors. Three boards were set agoing, viz.: J. A. Buchanan v. J. A. Robertson, A. B. Scott v. G. M. Bonar, and C. Morrison v. T. M'Gowan—while Rodgers, Hulme, M'Kelvie, and M'Dermid await results in above for opponents in the third' round. Scott and Bonar in their fifth game, opening 11 16, 23 18, "Bristol," had the position:—Black: 1,2, 8, 10, 11, 12, 20. White: 17, 18, 19, 21. 80, 81, 32. Black (Bonar) to play:—2 7, 17 14, 10 17, 21 14, 7 10, 14 7, 3 10, 31 27, 11 16, 18 15, 16 23, 15 6, 1 10, 27 18, 20 24, 80 26, 12 16, 2G 22, 16 19, drawn. Buchanan scored from Robertson in their fifth gam3, the position being:—Black: 1,5, 6,7, 8, 12, 19, 23. White: 14, 16, 25, 26, 30, 81, 32. Black (Buchanan) to plav:—6 9*. 26 22, 9 18, 22 15, 23 27, Buchanan won. (* The only move to win.) Buchanan passed into the third round. As M'Gowan and Morrison were equal on completion, of their sixth game, a weak opening—ll 16, 23 19—was resorted to. M'Gowan, having White, played 27 to 18, and a draw resulted.
