PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

SOCIETY'S ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animate was held in the Town Hall on the IBth inst., and was attended by some 25 members. I The president (Mr G. Fenwick) waa in the chair. The balance sheet showed that £298 15b had been received by way of subscriptions during the year, and £BB 15s 6d by way ofdividends on debentures. During the year the society had contributed £SO to the Royal Society, London. The amount at credit of current account at the bank (including cash in hand, £2 Is) was £llO 7s 7d, as compared with £6l 9s Id in 1916. The President, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, said it was worthy of note that, notwithstanding the loss of members due to tho war ana other causes, the membership roll was even larger than it was at this time last year. This was due to the remarkable energy and efforts of their inspector, Mr John Craig.— (Applause.) Prevention •of cruelty was what the society aimed at, and he ventured to say that there ■ were fewer cases of cruelty to animate than there were a few years ago. The public were fully awara that any suspected case of cruelty had onlj to be brought under the socictv's notice ttf be fully investigated by Mr .Craig. Shortly put, the society was doing its work better to-day than it' did years ago. Mr Fen* wick then referred to the donation or. £SO to the Royal Society in London, which wai to be used to assist in erecting a veterinary hospital for horses of the NewZealand Division at the front. Referring to the death of Mr Robert Glendining, tho speaker said Mr Glendining was a cheerful supporter of the society, and helped it from vear to year. ' The balance sheet showcel that tho society was in a better position financially than it was the previous year. Denniston, in moving that Mjp Fenwick be re-elected president, referred W. the interest taken by Mr Fenwick in tho society, and considered that it was fortunate in having such a good man at the head of its affairs. ■»» /i t The motion was seconded by Mr Crosby Morris, and carried unanimously. Mr Fenwick, in returning thanks, said ho was only one of a number who took a keen interest in the society's affairs. He was deeply indebted to the members of committee for the assistance they had given, him during the year. Vice-presidents were elected as follow: — Messrs Crosbv Morris, W. Mills, and W. Livingstone. The election of committee resulted as follows: —Mrs Edwards, Mrs Porteous, and Miss Porteous, his Worship tho Mayor' (for the time- being), Rev. W, Saun< ders, Mr W. D. . Snowball, Rev. Graham was re-elected secretary and hon. treasurer, and Moss'-s Wm. Brown and Sons were re-elected auditors. Tn concluding the meeting, the • President referred to the good attendance, which he accepted as an evidence of appreciation of the society's work.
