RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

D.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. . Tibst Day—Thursday, February 14. The Dunedin Cup meeting, which occupies a prominent place in the racing history of New Zealand, opened in fine but dullish weather. The attendance was fairly representative, and included visitors from all parts of the South Island, whilst a few from across Cook Strait wore also noticed on the scene. A look over the -lawn and stands daving the progress of the racing gave tho impression that the attendance was really good despite the restricted railway service. Travellers by road contributed very largely towards building up the crowd, and an unusually large number of motor cars was inustf;;-ed in the enclosure behind the saddl'jig paddock. The track was rather on the herd side., and found out on© or two run:;«rs, notably the southern maro Special Order, who ran an oxoellr'nt race considering 6ho was very lame after the Stewards' Welter. Taken all round, thv. card provided 'some very interesting sport, v/ith close and exoiting finishes. In the Dunedin Cup, M&rjjerino just beat Wardancer after a ding Song battle, and in the Publicans' Handicap narrow matins existed between the first three as- the placed lot flashed past the post. An inquiry was held at the instigation of the stipendiary steward (Mr Currie) into the mishap which led to Battle Eve losing jjjja rider (Bagby). Tho rider of Sir Malt {Adams) frankly a'dmitted ■ that his horse had crossed Battle Eve, and stated that he had done his best to prevent his mount" boring over. The evidence showed that Sir Malt was a difficult horse to manage, and the Judicial Committee agreed that the mishap was quite accidental. The sum of £23,272 10s was put through the machine for the day, as compared with £18,137 for the corresponding day of last year. The following are the results: AUTUMN HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 130sdvs; second 26sovs and third 13sovs One mile and three-quarters, a—Mr H. A. Knight's br g by Calibre—Clytie, 6yrs, 10.11 (P.
