Nothing has been more talked about by, followers of the turf this week than activity of the polico in "'rounding up" a number of alleged bookmakers and their,] supposed clients. It is, of course, notorious that stay-at-home backers have little troublei in backing their fancies away from thescene of action; but the police potion this week resulted in many folk hesitating to take any financial interest in the decision of events at Dunedin and Hawora. Whether the detectives will succeed in proving tha' charges brought against the arrested rneni has yet to be seen. Members of the Trentham Trainers' Association havo suggested to the Wellington Club's Ouurse Committee that the number board which is set almost in the centre of tho new winter grass gallop at Trentham should bo removed. Although the work, will take some little- time to do, as tha' board is set in concrete foundations, tha > present timo is considered opportune by tho ' trainer* for effecting the improvement. The local filly Rose Pink appears nicely: handicapped in the Nelson Cup with 8.4.' ; Tho daughter of Kilbroney and Madclcß i won tho Hokitika Handicap, of one mile! and a-quarter, with 8.6 up. in 2min ft .4-sscc; and tho Foxton Cup, with 8.4 g, in 2min lOsec.

Tho New Zealand Cup winner Menclaus Continues to do work, and is expected to give a good account of himself at Wanganui next week. After tho reports from the south thai Biplano was hitting himself in his work, and was a doubtful starter at Wanganu), it came as a surprise to see tho Comedy, King colt, with Lovesick and Missouri, pas*< ing through' Wellington this week on theirl way to the riverside town. Biplane was Looking tit, and as Hymesfra is reported to have recovered from his recent mishap the meeting of these two fliers and Estland is being awaited with the keenest interest.
