February 16.—There has been a sudden change from the warm weather recently experienced. For tho past three days theie have been high winds, but no rain has fallen. Picnic. —The annual picnic in connection with the Queenstown Church of England Sunday School was held at Kawarau Falls on Saturday last. Fine weather prevailed, and an enjoyable time was spent by the children, teachers, and parents. Bowling.—Three rinks from the Clyde Club visited Queenstown on Saturday and played a match against the Queenstown Club. Evenly-contested games resulted in a win for Clyde by 62 to 56. Confectioners' Conference.—The annual conference of New Zealand confectioners was held in Queenstown on Friday last, and ■was attended by 16 representatives of the trade. Publican's License Cancelled. —The first application in New Zealand for the cancellation of a publican's license under the War ' Regulations was made in Queenstown on Tuesday, when Police Inspector Fouhy, of Invereargill, applied before the Wakatipu Licensing Committee for the cancellation of • the license of the Glenorchy Hotel, held -by - James C. Knowles, who had been three times ■convicted for breaches of.the Licensing Act. 'The members of committee, present were "• Messrs G-. C'ruickshank, S.M. (chairman), A. Ford, and D. F. Sutherland. Mr W. Tuition .appeared for the licensee. After hearing the defence the chairman intimated that they had decided to cancel the license, such cancellation to take effect from March 9 next (the date of the qiuirterly meeting of the Licensing Committee). Mr Knowles must then submit the name of someone approved of by the committee, to whom a license to carry on tho hotel would be issued. By the pnnual meeting in June probably Mr Knowles would have secured a purchaser for the property. General.—At the Warden's Court at Queenstown on Saturday James A. Sligo's application for a special claim of six acres (part of the old Invincible mine), Eees River, was granted.—At tile Arrow Warden's Court on Monday the applications of several Gibbston settlers for change of purpose of their water rights from mining to mining; irrigation, and domestic use were recommended to - the Minister for approval. Protection" for six months was granted the Shamrock Company for mining privileges at Arrow River, the grounds for the application being the inability to get labour to work the claim. The Inspector of Mines sent in an objection to the application of G. D. Baird for six months' protection of Bracken's Gully water-right, but after hearing evidence the Warden (Mr Cruiokahank) granted the application.
