WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

Tho monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston on Saturday and was attended by Councillors Robt. Mathieson (chairman), Jas. SI. Miller, Hugh O'Neill, Thos. M'Lay, Jas. Chapman, Geo. Clark, and T. H. Pilbrow. _ - Resolutions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Privates Joseph Jones and Hartstonge, who had been killed in France. A statement; was submitted showing "thirds," "fourths," and "Tialves" from Crown lands, accrued to January 31, amounting to £ll 4s Bd.—Received, amounts allocated to bo expended in the districts "where they were earned. The District Engineer of the Public Works Department, Dunedin, wrote pointing out that a balance of authority amounting to £33 17s 6d, Macraes to Hyde (£1 for £1) remained unexpended, which if not required would be cancelled to avoid carrying over at tho end of* the financial year.—Writer to be informed that liabilities had been incurred which will about absorb the amount of the grant. The Y.M.O.A. Appeal Committee, Dunedin, wrote making suggestions regarding the proposed collection on Red Triangle Day.—lt was resolved that the members of the council be a committee to canvass the county for subscriptions in aid of what was unanimously considered to be a deserving object. The County Clerk, Manawatu County Council, forwarded tho following resolu)ion for consideration:—"That the Minister's attention be drawn to the fact that through th'e Railway Department refusing to run Special trains in connection with race meetings a large amount of extra motor traffic is thrown upon the roads, and that the cost of repairing the extra damage done by the JBBotor traffic is much greater to the country than the cost of running special trains to local raco meetings; further, it is estimated that tho extra cost of repairing tfcmage done to the ro< ds in the country through races amounts to at least £IOOO per annum; that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to all local bodies in New Zealand with a request that they support tho resumption of race specials, so that local bodies will not be penalised by tho policy of the Railway Department.—Cr Pilbrow, in moving that the council endorse tho resolution of the Manawatu County Council said that the Government had been most inconsistent in its action towards raco meetings. The Railway Department had the rolling stock lying idle and would not utilise it for the purpose of conveying passengers.—The motion was carried, and it was also resolved to writo to the member for the district, urging his j co-operation in having the wishes of the j Manawatu County Council complied with. j Win. The Ranger reported that he had impounded 20 cows and two horses during the month. —Received. The revenue for the month was reported to be £195 2s lOd. Accounts amounting to £215 7s were passed for payment.
