THE OTIRA TUNNEL.
CHRISTCHURCH,_ February 14. A largely-attended meeting last night discussed the question of accelerating the rate of progress of the Otira tuunel works. Among those present were representatives from most of the local bodies in Canterbury, also from the West Coast. The meeting resolved to urge the Government and members of Parliament that, from motives of economy, an immediate attempt should bo made to soeedily finish the Otira tunnel and open railway traffic at the earliest pos-' siblo moment, thus turning the Midland railway from a heavy annual financial burden into a revenue-earning concern. It was also resolved to urge the Government to immediately 'take in hand the procuring of the necessary electric power for working the tunnel traffic.
