PICNICS.

The Grocers' thirty-fourth annual picnic was held at Portobello under the most favourable weather conditions; and was a great success in every way. About 800 people were present. The programme was. a lengthy one, and eome very good finishes were witnessed in the different events. The prizesftwcre good and numerous, while, toys, lollies, and radkim bubblors were in abundance. 'The committee was attentive to everything, and the president (Mr W. Rennick), assisted by an energetic secretary, kept things going' in full swing. The Dunedin Bakers and Pastrycooks' Union held its annual picnic at Company's Bay on Saturday, and provided a very fine outing for about 3000 people. The day was an ideal one for a trip on the harbour. An abundance of fruit, lollies, and toys was provided 'for the children, and there were a. largo number of races, tug-of-war, and a baby show. The committee in charge was a strong one, and all worked hard. The Maori Hill Band contributed in no small degree to the success of the outing. The baby show caused a bit of excitement among the gentler sex, while the tug-of-war. was 'the most strenuous half-hour of the day for those competing. The annual picnic of tho Port Chalmers waterside workers was held at the Kaik, and proved most enjoyable. There was a large attendance. Welcome music was provided by Beath's String Band. The baby show and tug-of-war were full of interest. The babies proved a fine lot, and the judges had a hard task in deciding the winners. The tug-of-war caused great excitement, and was won by the Strong gang. The Cosmopolitan Race caused great merriment. The competitors had to place tneir coats, hats, and boots in a heap in front of them. They then ran 75 yards to a g-iyen point and back, while on their way their clothes were shifted and mixed up in different heaps.
