THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.

WEST COAST CONSOLIDATION MOVEMENT. GRET'MOUTH, February 11. Practically all the sawmillers of the Grey and Westlaud Counties were present or represented at Greymouth yesterday afternoon at the invitation of the Canterbury Commissioner of the National Efficiency Board (Mr J. A. Frostick), who made a special trip to the West Coast to inaugurate a Standing- Committee of those interested to deal with matters affecting the industry. The Commissioner, in the course of an able address., indicated tho subjects of national importance upon which the committee mighx advis-a tho board, such as the domai'catk'.-n of forest country- into areas to bo reserved or otherwisi, afforestation methods, securinsr the best restilfc-s from existing forests anJ tho utilisation of waste products. A committee, under the National Efficiency Board, of seven sawmillere, was apIjointed. At the request of the commissioner a chairman not connected with tho sawmilling industry was appointed, Mr T. Eldon Coatess consenting to fill the position. Meetings of tho committee will bo held alternately at Greymouth and Hokitika at frequent intervals. From tho remarks of the commissioner it was evident that the importance of the milling industry is fully appreciated by tho Government, and that, through tho National Efficiency Board, its interests will bo assured adequate representation.
