AUTUMN FLOWER SHOW

PORT CHALMERS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A fine collection of flowers was exhibited at the autumn flower show of the Port Chalmers Horticultural Society on the Bth. The quality of tho exhibits was well up to that of past seasons, especially when the unfavourable weather immediately preceding the show is taken into account. The general entries were about as numerous as usual, but gome- of the special classes might have been better supported. The children's sections continuo to be well supported, and their exhibits maintain a high, standard. Competition was again keen among exhibitors of gentlemen's " buttonholes, which, made an attractive ghow. Several general entries were received from Palmerston to Kaitangata, as well as from Dunedin. Tho sweet peas were undoubtedly the main feature or the show by reason of their quantity, size,' colouring, and fragrance. Sixty entries were received in this eection, and all were exhibits of which the-growers might be proud. Tho roses oame second in the number of entries, but, while a very nice collection, they showed unmistakable signs of tha weather. Mr J. P. Johnston, of North-East Valley, had a fine exhibit of collaretta dahlias, the cactus single and double varieties also being well represented at the show. Tho fruit and vegetable sections were, as usual, prominent features, tho judge (Mr Tannock) giving high praiso to Mr J\ Kaan's fine vegetable exhibit. The decorative and floral work was 'pretty and distinctly pleasing. Dr M'Killop (Seacliff} had a very fine exhibit of several varieties of flowers. Much of the work in connection with the show fell to the hon. secretary (Mr W, J, Johnston.) and the hon. treasurer (the Rev. Mr Peryman), who deserve credit for their labours. The following were the judges:—Sweeii peas. Mr Wall; decorative work (adults and children), Miss M'lntyro; pot plants, roses, cut flowers, and vegetables, Mr Tannock.
