AN ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY.
OHRISTCHURCH, February 5. Before the Military Service Board to-day, the Hon James Alexander Borthwick, of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, meat exporters appealed on the grounds that he was in chaxgo of the Australasian business of tha firm. There were three freezing works in New Zoaland and three in Australia and £2,000,000 worth of meat and by-products were shipped a year. Two of the appellant's younger brothers were serv•ng Mr Borthwick told the board it was a matter for argument whether he was a resident "of New Zealand, but he preferred to rely on the fact that he was engaged in fin" important essential industry. Th« board agreed that appellant's services wero necessary to a large industry, and adjourned the case sine die.
