RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FORBURY PARK TROTTING MEETING. FIEST DAT. TfTTJESDAY, Jakuakt 31. The Forbury Park Trotting Club opened its meeting in dull and threatening'weather, and several showers fell during the afterr , noon. Tho heavy rain overnight did not seriously affect the going beyond rendering it a shade slow and sticky. After tha second raoe tho track became a bit heavy, but it quickly dried again, and at tho finish , it was quite good. The breeze in evidence grew stronger towards tho conclusion of the card. In the Duncdin Cup, Tamarisk and Rorke's Drift slipped away at the start, and at one stage they appeared likely tc have the race to themselves. Moneymaker, however, acted with great resolution over the last lap, and got up to score a meritorious* win in the last couple of strides. The First Amatour Handicap practically developed into a duel between Peter Bell and Swiftwood. Peter Bell moved off well, and obtained a good lead, whilst Swiftwood : was on his wheel going down the back stretch for the last time. In the run home Peter Bell appeared to bo holding Swift- i wood at bay, but put in a mix and tha latter won by over two lengths. Ururua finished about a dozen lengths away, and , then came Paul Huon and Mayfield. / Haroldlander was sent put a strong favourite for the Musselburgh Handicap, and although not acting too kindly in the first part he finally gathered up Ururua and had the race won a lap from home. Ururua put in a couple of bad breaks, and eo spoilt a fair chance of upsetting the favourite. None of the others was capable oL threatening danger except Erlstoke, who shaped promisingly. i The Kensington Handicap provided an excellent race. In the early part Homeland, Scenery, and South Star were piloring the way from Galindo Belle and Cola Bess. Homeland was the first to retire, and beginning the last lap Scenery and South Star led Eros, Galindo Belle, and . Colo Bess. Scenery wasi first into tha straight, but coming down the running Colo Bess wore her down and won by two lengths, whilst Eros finished another " two lengths away, with Gold Queen, South Star, and" First Toll fairly close up to the placed lot. The scotching pen went through tha names of Dillon Eddy, Whispering' Willie, and Quincey Bello, leaving a field of 15 to face the starter in the Dunedin Cup. Moorland was made a good favourite. At tha word " Go" Harold Junior reared, and Hardy Wilkes had to go round him to get clear." Tamarisk and Rorke's Drift began smartly, and quickly opened up a gap of a dozen "lengths from Dunspey at tho end of a furlong. As the field ran on Tamarisk and Rorke's Drift were still out on their own, and looked to hold a good chance ofsplitting winning, honours. The rest of the field, with the exception of Adelaide Direct, who was hopelessly out of it, wero running in close order. At the beginning of the last lap Matchlight fell, and brought down Sir Fulham. Going down the back Moneymaker set sail after the leaders, and although his chance looked somewhat remote as Tamarisk landed in tho straight with a, commanding lead Pringlo got his horse up in tho last few strides to win by a neck. „ Hardy Wilkes finished third about four lengths away, and then came Agathos, Dunspcv, and Frandotia. Hardy Wilkes ran a good race after meeting with a piece ofl bad luck at the start. ■ Wild Cherry was elected a hot favourite for the Trial Handicap. She showed out first at the start, but mixed and losb ground, whilst Young Weary hung on the mark. Marvelle showed the way to Satin Bov, and after going a lap the favourite' moved into third piaco. Entering the straight, tho leaders swung a bit wide, and Wild Cherry made up ground on the rails.Wild Cherry ran to the front over a quarter of a mile from home, and stalling off Marvelle's final effort won comfortably by a neck. Satin Boy was third. 12 lengths away, and Dolly Spanker was a bad fourth. Manresa went out a good favourite for the Otago Handicap, and won from end to end. Pringlo, however, had anything bnp an easy ride, and his mount left her feet three or four times, but was cleverly caaigirj back. He finally won on a mix from Patai'd, >who also went up a few strides from home. James Madison was threaten*

ing dungor, but settled his chance* by braikir.g. Nothing out of the plaoings got into tbe danger zone. There was a good deal of trouble at the start of the King George Handicap. Vice- ' admiral pliyed up, and got badly away, and Plta-Roa began slowly. Admiral Hal got well away, and quickly opened up a gup from George M. Junior. Admiral Hal was still well out as they ran down the ■back the second time, but in the run homo Trix Pointer overhauled him and won behalf a length. Will o* the Wisp was third, about throe lengths away, ' just beating (Rorke's Drift, and Albert Cling came next. Of the lot on the front lino only Admiral 'Hal and Georgo M. Junior moved off well. Blackford was mads a strong order for 'the Electric Handicap, but did not begin too well through getting blocked. Leo Bell and Silver Quick led Blackford out oF the straight, but going down the - back Silver Quick went awa.y and finally Avon by four lengths from Huon Pateh, who beat Blackford by two lengths. Will o' the Wisp, ■Bill Brown, and Elveno finished next m the % order named. During the day the totalisator handled the sura of £18,784 10s, as against £13,382 for the corresponding day of last year. Second Day.—Saturday, Februaey 2. The Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting concluded- in fine weather, but a gale of wind made- matters distinctly unpleasant. The track was fairly hard, but the use of salt water down the straight kept the dust in check on that part of the track, but when fields were racing down the'back stretch the horses were almost obscured. With such a breeze, however, it was an extremely difficult, if not a hopeless, task to attempt to allay the dust. A feature of the day's racing was the splendid performance put up by Hardy Wilkes in the Crescent Handicap, which the son of Marvin Wilkes won in 4min 36 2-ssec, or over lOsec faster than the pacers went in the principal event on the card. The win was greeted with applause from the ' spectators, and there is no doubt that Hardy Wilkes holds strong claims to be considered! the best straight-out trotter ever seen in Australasia. Bright Child looked to hold a good winning chance in the Second Amateur Handicap, but mixed when going down the back in charge of the field, and gave way j*> Dolly Rodgers, who was in turn cut down by Oxendale in the run home. Galindo Belle put in a mix half-way up the straight, but she got back in time to* beat Dolly Rodgers for second money! Bright Child finished close up, fourth. George J. broke his hobbles in the early part of the race. General Bon opened up what looked an unbridgeable gap in the first part of the Stewards' Handicap, but he stopped to a walk in the last la.p, and South Star won easing up by a dozen lengths from Galindo Belle, who just beat Gold Queen and The Tank. Beewood promptly took chargo in the Telegraph Handicap. Caretta. Scenery, and Dimness failed to strike into their Rait. Over the last lap Beewood and Nihilist singled themselves out from the others, and in the run home the latter won by over a length, Great Britain a dozen lengths away, and Hectoroo next. Peter Mac failed to get going in the Forbury Handicap, and Captain Stanley was pulled up early in the race. Pax soon took charge and piloted the way with Junior always in close attendance, with. Trix Pointer, Pita-Roa, and Rorke'3 Drift forming the leading division. Pax was first into the straight, where Harold Junior took charge, and finally won by nearly three lengths from Trix Pointer, who beat Pax by two lengths; Rorke's Drift and Pita-Roa fairly close up. Dunspey faded out after being close up to the leaders a lap from home. The field in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes scored- up and were sent away at the first attempt. Only two, in St. Anthony and Pieter Zimmerman, went off well, and the pair practically had! the race to themselves. St. Anthony mixed during the race, but had too much pace for Pieter Zimmerman, and beat him nicely by three lengths. Royal Lady broke her sulky. Daphne Dawson failed to get going, and although Rose Peters and Lady Esma went after the -first two they could make no impression on the two leaders. The Crescent Handicap, from a spectacular point of view, provided the race of the day. A gale raised a good deal of dust and somewhat spoilt the view, but the field ran in fairly close order throughout, and going down the back for the. last time several names were called as the winner. Sunrise was responsible for most of the pace-malc-ing, but two furlongs and a-half J rom home Billy Parole had taken charge. Turning for home Hardy Wilkes, who had- been moving up and improving his position, ran into second place, and in the run home beat Billy Parole by a neck, and scored a popular 'win in a fine race. Pax led out m the Royal Handicap and showed the way from end to end. Turning into the straight the first time Admiral Hal and Will o the Wisp smashed up and Rorke's Drift also got into trouble. Pita-Roa, and Wilkie were running behind the winner over the first circuit, but at the finish Agathosjust beat Moneymaker and Brown Bell for ttard place. Birdwood and Prince Poole begun badly at the start. Fernleigh led from start to finish in the Au Revoir Handicap, and had Bill Brown and Gladeye as his nearest attendants, but neither could make any impression on the winner, who won nicely ITie placed lot finished well out from the others, who were headed by Blackford Silver Quick, and The Linnet.. The totalisator mvestments for the day were £24,661 as against ££1,336 10s for the corresponding davlast year, making a total for the meetfnl of £44,445 10s The amount put through at the last summer meeting was £43,445 10s.
