HANMER SPRINGS.

. January 24. —A meeting of the Hcnmer Springs Cemetery Board was held on January 22, Mr J. Dodds in the chair. There were present Messrs Manson, Stewart, Whitmore, and J. C. Wallace (secretary). It waa decided to expend £lO in clearing tha grounds of broom, etc, and erecting a turnstile at the side of the gate. Owing to cattle straying into the cemetery, it wa> decided to keep the gate locked. The secretary declined to accept any remuneration for his services during the past year. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. Doddil for the use of the meeting room and for officiating as chairman; also to Mr G. Forbes, officiating M.P. r for hia assistance in re maintenance grant. School Committee. —The usual monthly meeting of the Hanrner Plains School Committee was held in the school early in the month. Present: Mr B.H. Whitmore (chairman), Messrs Graves, Farrow, Lucas, and Cox. The Education Board notified that it had been decided to enlarge the school, install dual desks, alter the school name to read "Hanmer Springs School," have the ground surrounding the school shingled, and some of the large Pinus radiata trees cut dovn. An assistant teacher has been appointed, Miss D. G. Turner being selected to fill the position. The school will reopen on February 5, after a vacation of six weelcs. The annual inspection report proved most satisfactory. The accounts and balance sheots have been audited and returned by the board, and show a balance in hand of £7 19s 6d. Three pounds ten shillings has been voted for annual prizes. On account of tho unsettled state of the weather the date of the annual picnic has not yet been decided on. A canvas shelter has been erected to enable the children to receive their tuition out of doors; this has been found of great benefit during the hot weather. It has been decided to purchase six cords of firewood and have it sawn into suitable lengths. The funds of the committee have been placed in the local Post Office Savings Bank. Improvements.—The travelling public will be interested to know that . tha bridge over Gleuollo* Gorge, on the road to Hanmer, ha.e been redecked. The washout on tha road near the Perciva.l River is being repaired, a temporary bridge having been erected in the meantime. The Jollies' Pass road is being regraded, and much-needed improvements made. A new bridge is badly needed over Dog Greek on the Jollies' Pasa road, and it :e :o be hoped that, something will be done soon to improve matters there. A noticeable feature is. the absence or-wan-dering stock on the roads, the recent appointment of a ranger being responsible for this. Concert.—A most enjoyable concert waa held in the Queen Mary Hospital on Friday night. Songs were sung by Mrs J. W. Bailey, Corporal Ramage, Corporal Dobson, Sergeant-major Ridgway, ex-Sergeant Woods, Private M'Laughlin, Private Smith, Private Will, and Mr Graves. Duets were rendered by Corporal "Oobson and Dance-corporal i\ewman; and recitations by Miss Dearsley, Gunner Wilby, and Mr J. W. Bailey. An amusing sketch was given by Mr and Mrs Bailey, a mandolin solo by Private Macdonald, a violin solo by Mr C. Ohristensen. Theie was a most entertaining boxing bout between "Charlie Chaplin" and . Private Modrich. The accompaniments "were played by Miss K. Summers, Mies E. RenneH, and others.
